Nursery admissions: Only distance and sibling category this year

IF COURT PUTS NURSERY ADMISSION UNDER RTE, SCHOOLS WILL HAVE TO ADMIT STUDENTS USING ONLY THE DISTANCE CATEGORY

NEW DELHI: This year the Delhi government will allow schools to admit students on the basis of only two factors for nursery admissions— distance from school and sibling in the same school, according to sources.

“The government has decided to do away with the alumni category, which according to a large number of parents was unfair and discriminatory,” a source said.

Last year onwards, schools were restricted from deciding their own criteria and asked to follow a set system that allotted points for distance, sibling, alumni, girl child and transfer points. The transfer points’ category was removed after case after case was filed either for it or against it.

“The directorate of education will not stagger the distance points. All students within the 8 kilometer radius of a school will get same points,” said the source.

The one thing, however, that could completely change the direction in which the admission guidelines are going so far is a petition pending in the Supreme Court. The petition demands that nursery admission be made part of the Right to Education Act.

The final hearing in the case is scheduled for November 14.

If the court puts nursery admission under RTE, then schools across the country will have to admit students using only the distance category. This change will be applicable across the country.

The government is planning to release the guidelines in November this year but forms will be made available only in January. Last year the guidelines came out in December and forms were made available in January.

Another new aspect in this year’s guidelines is the provision for children with special needs. As per High Court orders, 3% of seats will be reserved in schools where there are adequate provisions for these children. The application process for them will be centralised and the Delhi government will come out with the list of schools that have proper facilities for children with special needs.
