First child points: No clear guidelines over admission of twins in nursery

NEW DELHI: With the nursery admissions to the nearly 1.25 lakh seats in 1,700 private unaided schools expected to begin from January 1, parents of twins are in a dilemma about which one of their children will be eligible for the points that some schools allot to the ‘first child.’

KARUN SHARMA/FILE n Nursery admissions may start from January 1.

“We are getting queries from parents of twin children as they are confused whether both the children will get first child point or not , in case any schools gives first child points in their admission criteria. It is school specific and some schools give first-child points to both the children, but not all. Many schools give admission to both the twins in case either of them was selected in draw of lots, while a handful of school keep points specifically for twins. The Directorate of Education (DoE) should come out with clear guidelines on this,” said Sumit Vohra, founder of admissionsnursery.com, which helps parents seeking nursery admission for their children.

Soumya Gupta, the director of education, however, said that the DoE was not at liberty to interfere with admission criteria as schools were free to fix their own measures. “We can only monitor to ensure that these are fair, reasonable and transparent,” she said.

Admissions to nursery classes are based on a point-based system. As things stand, the distance criterion carries maximum points in most schools.

The radius of the distance differs from school to school. Other criteria include girl child, sibling in the same school, children of alumni and students with a single parent. A hundred points are divided among these criteria.

Last year, schools such as the DPS Mathura Road, had also assigned 15 points if the applicant was the first child of the family.

For parents like Deepak Kumar, an Indraprastha extension resident, this question is of utmost importance as his twin girls are seeking admission this year.

“I know that there will be points assigned to them for being girls, but which one will be eligible for the first child points? They were born seconds apart. As seats are limited, especially in the good schools, this may make a difference,” he said.

The principal of a leading private school in Delhi said that this has not featured at a policy level yet.

“Technically both kids should be eligible for the points, but it is up to the school’s discretion right now. I don’t think the DoE has ever delved into this,” the principle said.

I checked with birla vidya NIKETAN school, Pushp Vihar... They give points to both twin child, NGFS saket said as per DOE guidelines for coming session we will inform you...its definitely very difficult situation for parents with twins... DPS R K purse... They enter names of both twins in one chit and then do draw... Either Both are selected or none... That seems OK as a twin parent I seriously can not send my kids to different schools.
