Nursery admissions in Delhi are a mess

For the first time, the academic session has not yet begun for nursery classes in Delhi’s private-unaided schools.

ith no state government in place, nursery admissions in the capital have become a mess. For the first time, the academic session has not yet begun for nursery classes in Delhi's private-unaided schools. Three stays put on admissions in this month, two by the High Court and one by the Supreme Court, have left parents clueless as to when their children will be able to start school. The anxious parents have now pinned their hopes on 21 April, when the apex court is expected to give some clarity on the issue.

Shantanu Mehrotra, a resident of South Delhi, has been struggling for two years to get his four-year-old daughter admitted to school. "I had applied to 25 schools last year, but could secure admission in none. This year I applied to 23 schools and finally got a seat in one. We bought the uniform, bag, shoes and books, when the stay came. If the court asks the schools to carry out a draw of lots again, it will be unfair to all the people who had secured admission in the first place," said Mehrotra. He has already paid the school fee of around Rs 1.2 lakh including tuition fee of Rs 46,000 for a quarter and Rs 50,000 for extra-curricular activities, for two years. As per the school's policy, half of the tuition fee is refundable however the sum for other activities is non-refundable. "It will be a big loss for my child's future education, if we miss admission this year as well," Mehrotra added.

Ricky Khurana, based in west Delhi, broke all records applying to 56 city schools. "I left everything and sat online every day for a month to apply to various schools. My son finally got a seat in a good school, but the admissions were stayed. I have lost my peace of mind taking leave from work for the last four months to run around to get my son to school," he said.

The Apex court had passed the recent stay order in response to a petition filed by those parents who had come to the national capital from other parts of the country and sought admission under the inter-state transfer (IST) category, which was deleted during the admission process by the Delhi government owing to its abuse on a large scale.

"There is a lot of discrepancy in the data of seats provided by the schools to the Directorate of Education (DoE) on the basis of which the court will give its verdict. Admissions to IST category seats were scrapped on 27 February by the HC. However, the seats that were vacated thereafter have not been displayed by the schools. Despite these seats being vacant, the schools have announced admissions closed with no second or third list," Madhu Sachdeva, a parent, told this newspaper.

A.K. Pandey, principal, Ahlcon International School, said, "The LG's guidelines on the current admission cycle have added to the confusion and panic among parents. In all likelihood, if the 21 April verdict is delayed, the chances of beginning classes before summer vacations are weak."

He added that the problem of nursery admissions is manifold. "Firstly, there are only one lakh nursery seats in private schools in the city for which there are over four lakh applicants every year. Also, the distribution of schools in each area is not uniform. There are discrepancies with the selection criteria too."

Sumit Vohra, who runs admissionsnursery.com, an online forum to help parents, said, "This admission cycle has created history with multiple litigations by parents. Over 20 notifications released by the DoE, a couple of stay orders by the court and there is still no clarity as to when and which children will be able to start school. Also, if the session does not start next month, are the schools justified in taking the fee for this quarter?" The LG's office was unavailable to comment.

@Shobit

No news with us ..kindly share your source of info .

we just update court cause lists and not hearsay .

My friend seen news on news nation channel.thx
WE should not make too much hues and cries as matters are sub judice which is beyond our control... We should wait for SC/HC decision with respect and dignity. I have read a post by someone who is blaming AN.com team that why they are silent today. For his/her kind information, AN.com team is not being paid by us so instead of blaming the AN team we should respect and appreciate their sincere effort...
If any decision is done by HC or matter is listed in cause list of SC, surely AN team will update as we all have already seen in past hearing. So be calm and be united...
Thank AN team and especially Sakshi madam for her sincere effort for providing us timely information...

Thanks Ajmal .
