GURUGRAM: A major tragedy was averted on Monday morning when a bus, belonging to the Delhi Public School-Ghaziabad (DPSG) in Palam Vihar got entangled in sagging cables in the western part of the city.
The bus was crossing Kabir Bhavan Chowk near Sector 8 at around 7.30am on Monday when it ran into the cables hanging low across the road.
A school official said the bus plies on the route every day. On Monday morning, the mishap was caused by cables that had sagged overnight, after the transformer they emerged from next to the road had leaned to one side because of excavation work on an adjacent plot. Fortunately, there was no power in the cables at the time. Teachers and attendants present in the bus quickly managed to extricate the kids in it. The male attendant then disentangled the cable with the help of a passerby.
The bus, which was picking up children for school, had two female teachers, a male and a female attendant and a dozen students at the time, said school principal Deepika Sharma.
"It's true the bus is taller than normal, but it plies on the same route every day," she said. However, the school administration has taken the incident seriously. "We'll seek an explanation from discom DHBVN," said Sharma.
The school has also reprimanded the driver for not being careful, but decided against firing him, confirmed a school official. "We're also trying to organise a session with traffic police for our drivers, to ensure safety," said Sharma.
The incident has left many parents shaken. Yashesh Yadav, whose children study in the same school, said that it the power department's fault. "The responsibility of maintaining a minimum height of power cables rests with the department," he said.
Pradeep Vats, whose daughter avails the same school bus, said there should be better training for drivers to avoid such situations. "School authorities need to train drivers. Other issues, like planning bus routes and student's security should be taken up with parents, in light of incidents happening in schools every day," Vats said.
Educationist Sumit Vohra said apart from carelessness, the incident also reeks of a mindset problem of employees dealing with children. "All school staff, be it in teaching or support, need to undergo counselling so that they take responsibility for the lives of children," said Vohra. He said people are yet to learn the right lessons from the Ryan incident, and incidents of overcrowding in school buses, etc, continue. "School staff is not like staff of other employers. They have to be more aware and careful, and think twice before taking decisions," he added.
Manpal Dhull, SDO of Palam Vihar division of DHBVN, where the accident occurred, said, "On Monday morning, when department officials informed police about the transformer leaning over, the land owner agreed to pay penalty and damages, and no case was registered," said Dhull. "The lines had tripped immediately after the cables sagged, so there was no safety threat to anyone."
