Parents want reservation for children with special needs

THERE SHOULD BE FIXED NUMBER OF SEATS FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. THE PROVISION OF 3% RESERVATION HAS BEEN PASSED BY THE DELHI HIGH COURT AND GURGAON SHOULD FOLLOW SUIT

Parents of children with special needs feel that nursery schools in Gurgaon should have a certain percentage of seats reserved for them.

Earlier in April, Delhi high court had ordered schools in the capital to reserve 3% seats for students with disabilities. This was to be above the 25% seats reserved for students from economically weaker sections (EWS) and disadvantaged groups. But the implementation of this directive has been under the scanner for some time.

“There should be a fixed number of seats for children with special needs. The provision of 3% reservation has already been passed by the Delhi high court and Gurgaon should follow suit. In some schools special needs children are a part of the EWS category and the number of applications of such students are marginal compared to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Special children then lose out on admissions in schools,” said Sumit Vohra, founder CEO, admissionsnursery.com

However, there is no such directive for schools in Gurgaon. A few schools have allotted points for children with special needs while many have a separate facility for such students.

“Since we admit students in nursery on the basis of first come, first serve we also receive applications of children with disabilities. Our school has an integrated system where they study with the regular children. We also have adequate number of special educators in the school,” said Sudha Goel, principal, Scottish High International School, Sushant Lok 1.

Meanwhile, the parents felt that there is limited number of seats in Gurgaon schools for such children. They feel that apart from reserving seats, it is essential that the school teachers and students are sensitised on how to deal with special needs children.

“More than the reservation, it is important that school staff, parents and peers are educated about the variety of signs displayed by such a child. A special needs child will learn faster in such an atmosphere,” said Kreeti Mitra Bhatia, whose son is autistic.
