I don't agree first come first serve policy. It is very difficult to complete all admissions in one particular day. If it is completed, very fine, But if not, then there are chances to grant admission to a few children even after working hours. Here transparency gets killed.

First come first serve should be in this manner: Allot batch no. or serial no. to everyone present or ask everyone to fill a form with a unique serial no. for this purpose. Announcement to be made as soon as the form for the last seat is issued. Wait list nos. also to be announced. This should be displayed on a computerized display screen.. After this a list of all these forms should be displayed on the school website as well. Call them serial wise for admission formalities and if anyone does not wish to take admission, the same should automatically be shown on the screen. Hope this will help the first come frist serve policy.
If it happens to be on first come fist served basis, it will become a race of who wakes up early in the morning and stands in the queue first. I would rather sleep outside the school in my car. What if you are not well or travelling on that day? Draw of lots is much better rather than racing for the forms.
Let us rephrase this.

Problem is, that when there are a large no of applicants, and its not possible to interact with everyone, what shud be the criteria of shortlisting

1. Child interaction
2. Parent's Qualifications
3. Distance

If I take one as a criterion, people will criticize why not other.

Even if I take all the criteria, and I still have a large no. of candidates, then what do I do?

Still if I fit in all parameters, and still I am not selected, then I start blaming the school/govt.

So thr is no end to it. What research says that the parents of qualified parents are intelligent/smart?

Why the richer section of society get all the goodies? Why not a EWS parent be encouraged to grow out of poverty and enhance the economic status of the community as well as the country? Methods again will differ, and some may like them, some may not.

But saying that becoz we are in higher class, and we are educated, qualified, so our children be given preference does not sound sophisticated.
Lot of people have mentioned that distance should be one of the criteria. But do you realise that distance can be a criteria if there is distribution of fairly good school across. In Gurgaon, mostly all the new schools like DPS, Amity, Sriram, Suncity, Scottish, Heritage, K.R Manglam, Ridge Valley and list can go on have opened up in new Gurgaon only as old Gurgaon is jam packed. The distance b/w say sector 4 /7 of old Gurgaon to these school in new Gurgaon is above 10Kms. So this means that kids of old Gurgaon can never make to these schools and they have to live with just Blue Bells and DAV? or if parents want they have to shift to new Gurgaon. In Gurgaon distance culd be a factor in selection only if there is equal distribution of school on both side of highway but this is not the case. Parents can decide if they want their kids to travel so much or not rather than school in this case.
While going through the website, the quotes and views from qualified and elite class repeatedly strikes my mind. Someone speak "Admit wards of qualified parents. This will help the school in its rating and the students as well. They prefer their wards should speak flawless English. They think English speaking parents and kids are considered smart ones while the others not. Because their environment might have become westernized, speaking English and performing western home based activities." Then what about other classes. Good schools are only meant for elite class - a status symbol. If everyone argues in favour of elite class, then there is no end to this problem. Elite class cannot bring allround development to our country. Everyone has to contribute irrespective of their caste, creed or religion. Therefore, manual draw of lots in public seems to be quite satisfactory option. The teachers will put in their best to transform the students into good Indian citizes from mixed backgrounds without any discrimination.
Very Well Said Maharamji !!
It is very clear in Article 14 and article 15 of Constitution Of India.
I agree with Maharam sir. what is required is to shatter this very mindset of "elite" and "brandedness" of schools
Key thing is that all the school in the same locality atleast should have more or less same criterias of chossing kids. Why only DPS Gurgaon has started this. Not sure about its motive as all schools are driven by money these days that it is difficult to rely on them even if they are doing right thing.

Other schools in Gurgaon are engaged in screening at all levels including the screening of forms itself which seems to be so damn unfair. There should not be such disparity. Moreover in Gurgaon schools never bother to disclose what criterias they are considering for choosing.
I Second BBB
I am going to be brutally honest here and I apologise, in advance, if I hurt any sentiments. Schools have their own positioning. Some schools prefer people with a professional background while others are more suited for businessmen. Yet others like a fusion of all cultures.

What you consider as 'elite' is a limitation of your own mind. Maybe G D Goenka is elite for you - not for me !. Again you may like DPS and I may not ! It is a limitation at the parent's end for this rate race of so called branded schools. Instead of concentrating on what is 'elite; and therefore sought after, it would make better sense for you to answer these questions

a) What do I really want my child to grow up like and therefore what is the best school for my child ?
b) What are my family values and what is my cultural and (sorry to be honest ) economic fit ? I heard G D Goenka take some obscene amount of money for overseas trips which made me rule it out as its beyond my affordability ! It also struck me that if I put in my child in an atmosphere that is beyond my capacity, my child is likely to develop insecurities.

I want a school that prefers professionals because those are the values that I want my child to grow up with and I would prefer people with the same values to be attending that school.

Answer yourself honestly - Is it the school or is it us (parents) who are creating brands out of schools ?

If schools are standing for certain beliefs - Let them, You stand for yours !
You are right. No doubt it's purely in parent's hand. You have brought out the true form of G.D.Goneka which I just heard about the luxurious life style and unbelievable fees which only crorepati can afford.

Awareness is more important among parents nowadays.

You are right we have to stand by our own.
well said hena
