Distance calculation

How do we calculate the distance from our residence to the school? Is it the aerial distance(between two points) or the actual distance(through google maps)? Need some clarity...

As DOE not clarified and have disabled old link , most probably they will guide as they will have software ready for ews for same 0-1/1-3/3-6 or will inform as we have highlighted and might come in tomorrows newspaper.
