“Na Chorharyam Na Cha Rajaharyam Na Cha Bharakari

Vyaye Krite Vardhat  ayev  nityam vidya dhanam sarva dhana pradhanam”

 which means

“It cannot be stolen by a thief.

It cannot be taken away by a King.

It cannot be divided among brothers.

It does not cause load. It always increases when spent.

The wealth of knowledge is the greatest of all wealth.”

In today’s world, the old saying needs a change. It’s been almost 2 months now that me and my husband were thinking about admissions. Our child is March 2008 born, so we were hoping that government makes the age 4+. But there were clear indications that this would not happen. Then on 15th December, the guidelines came in that the age is 3+, no occupational, no educational background to be considered. We were getting 100 points based on the previous year’s criteria and now this year that zeroed down to 40%. Then buying forms atleast for 20 schools was our aim. We spent over 5000 rupees or a little more on that. Suddenly again the 4+ wave hit and we were petrified.  The wave passed by. But results started pouring in like a hot soup, which is tasteless but has to be digested. Sleepless nights have increased. Our family values, and most of middle class values are based on the word education (me and husband both being engineers ourselves by merit). But today, knowledge in form of education, can be stolen by thief ( pay to touts or school authorities), can be taken away by king (management quota), can be divided among brothers(Neta’s children) and is indeed causing a burden both on parents and children both education wise and monetarily.

Indian values are spoken all around the world, but have lost their gloss. It indeed is a matter of great worry. Today, I am sure each one of us will get admission somewhere and atleast hoping so. But it has been the most stressful process/times for us till date.

@ Aparna :

I agree with you,and i must say u have expressed very nicely the feelings of parents.

Although we are also going through with the same phases and also we cut down to the point 40 from 90-100 as per points criteria..

Please don't loose hope..if u r depressed by the result of DPS..than dear it was always like this..Alumni and siblings will get the seats..

All is well :))
well said aparna...
totally agree with u aparna.....really nice quote....accrdng to last yr's point systm...i was also assured that my child will admisson in any school of my CHOICE....coz both me and my husband r post graduates nd have professional degrees with us...but the govt played another game :-( ..but nw i am feelng really helpless....wht's the use of our degrees whn v r  not able to provide a good school to our child........the govt is useless......the recent EWS case....1350 schools refused to gve admission to ews category....its all govt play ( what i think) first schools sold forms....suddenly we cant afford ews....like its a bullshit....there is govt's hand behind this to sale these seats as well and make fool of General public.....i am also worried and tense...with nightmares....wht will  happen if my child doesnt get admission anywhere......:-(

@ Aparna Raman and @ balvinder kaur arora

I can understand your pain and partially agree with your comments.

Partially agree because experiencing all the things myself and looking at parents at forum like this as well as outside this forum when we are with our families and in front of school. We behave entirely different.

First and foremost just by blaming govt. doesn’t solve our purpose. EWS Category is must and we should support from our heart.

Because it give a level playing field to everyone in society and if any one who is against it in my suggestion that person is on same page with public schools who are adamant not to admit children under EWS Category and they should never make a cry over schools indifferent approach.

Instead of this we parents should have lauded government for their novel approach and told school that we will not agree to admit our child if they doesn't take poor children.

This would have given more pressure on govt. to do right in case of wrong doing, but they think that every parent will follow what school will say and they don't have guts to say anything to schools.

I was amazed to see a lot of parent applying to more than 15-20 school. That means there was no thinking and study before applying to schools. We are in such a panic that oh my god my child life will be ruined if they don't start schooling right now. How many have studied the behavior of our children, their interest, their attitude and way of learning and then evaluate school according to that research and apply accordingly. Most of us will have an answer in no. including my family. I was termed mad by my own family and friends when i discarded DPS, MODERN and few big names as i have known a lot of pass outs from this school and their learning methods. I am not against these schools. They are good school but my daughter will loose all her positive traits if she gets admitted in these schools. In one of the DPS there was surety of admission to my daughter.

Now coming to controversies over Age, I agree that there should not have been any confusion over age. If it was supposed to be 4+ then Govt. should have stick to this rule. They should not create confusion whether to keep 4+ or 3+. This was wrong on Govt. part.

But again i saw a lot of parent arguing over that in other states there is no such bar on age hence there should not be any criteria in delhi too. A lot of parent wrote against Ashok Agarwal case regarding 4+ age. I really don't know how my parents know Ashok Agarwal and his contribution to landmark changes and empowerment to partents of children in Delhi.

If you look at various research studies, 4+ age is most suitable age for children to start formal schooling, though I will not comment if a parent wants to admit their children at the age of 3, Because a lot of parent are in a hurry. In my case the funny part is that my child will be 3 years 11 month and 17 day on 31 March 2011. Still I am for okay with 4+ age.

Now coming to point system this year

Yes govt. was wrong in giving school freedom to make their own point system which was abused heavily.

According to me location should be most important criteria and should have minimum 50 points.

Alumni and sibling should not collectively exceed 30 points

and 20 points for other criteria.

I know a lot of parents will disagree with me but it is my view for a tender age minimum distance should be the main criteria.

Sibling and alumni is the most controversial issue. According to me sibling is a genuine issue and there should be at least 20 points for the same. I am confused over Alumni thing.

There should be barter if any one is getting marks for alumni, then he or she should not get marks for first child and points should be same for alumni and first child and parent should get only one option out of the same.

Now coming to "professional degrees and job profile of parents", a lot of parent thinks that there should be some consideration on these things also. According to me this should be criteria at all. it creates a divide in society.

What will a IIM A passout will do if he or she chose a offbeat path of becoming a singer or dancer, are they less bright than any CEO of big multinational. In my case i am an MBA from one of the top 20 B school but opted out of job and started my own venture which employs a lot of engineers and interestingly my employees are in better situation if there is a point system for jobs as they are working as a team leader, or software developer or managers.

One of my friend after passing out from IIM right now he is pursuing his dream of education and livelihood for lower income people and does not earn much if we compare his earning with mine or any of the parent on this forum.

Please leave the mindset of professional jobs and qualifications; it will harm only middle class families. Because then only Children of Doctors, IAS,IFS, CEOs, Vice presidents of MNCs will have upper hand than any engineers, social workers, small business man and other mid level employees as well as people with low jobs.

There are few questions in my mind:

  1. How many of us hadn't applied to schools who asked for more than 25 rupees?
  2. How many of us took fight with school on discriminatory criteria themselves instead of Asking sumit jee or shakshi jee.
  3. How many of us made up mind that it is not end of life if our children get admission this year.
  4. How many of us didn't go to schools for admissions where results were out before 1 feb as it is against the rule.

How can these schools make our children educated and enlightend if they are not law abiding.

Parents with 4 yes my heartfelt congratulation to them and we should at least give them appreciation by putting their name on a special category on this website. I think Sumit jee will agree with me.

Because i am not with three yes a i had paid 400 to Apeejay, but will correct my mistake by not admitting even my child get admission there. Actually my wife paniked as i had applied only to 5 school and went there and paid 400 rs. and didn't told me about it initially.

@Rashmi Very Precious words

Thanks Sakshi,

I would like if you can take a poll on this issue and and atleast highlight the names of parents who fought with school fraud personaly and the 4 points which i mentioned.
