Points system discriminatory, say parents
Chances of securing a nursery seat in the Capital’s schools are proving to be extremely bleak if one’s child does not fall into categories like sibling, alumni and girl child, or in the management or EWS quotas.

With many city schools having released their first lists for pre-school admissions, it appears there is very little room left for the children belonging to the general category who do not secure points in these categories.

Many parents allege that the points system have come in the way of admission. The results announced by schools so far, the parents claim, give the impression that admission is a prerogative of only those who already have a sibling in the school or have parents in its alumni.

“I had applied at 22 schools in South Delhi, but could not manage to get even in one,” wrote Rahul Dhar, a disgruntled parent, on www.admissionsnursery.com, an online parents’ forum.

Dr Supradip, a scientist who had applied at 10 schools for his son’s admission this year, wrote: “Nothing left to share except a sorry figure... Not a single school offered admission to my son. He did not get selected because he is my first born and I am not an alumni of any Delhi school.”

The Directorate of Education (DoE) has allowed schools this year to frame their own selection criteria based on “just and rationale” means. As per DoE rules, the schools have to keep aside 25 per cent of the seats for students belonging to EWS. For the rest of the seats, schools adopted the points system. Most schools have reserved 50 per cent of the seats meant for the general category for the sibling or alumni quota.

For example, all 77 candidates selected by a reputed school in Vasant Vihar have secured points either under the sibling or alumni category.

Many schools have given up to 10 points for a girl child, which resulted in a clean sweep by girls in the general category at several top institutions.

Ashok Agarwal, founder of NGO Social Jurist, blamed the government for this crisis. “When you allow schools to do what they like, the consequences will always be like this,” he says.

Like corruption in our country, Education system too cannot be reformed and made transparent in one day since more business people and builders have rooted in Dwarka where I live. Atleast we can go ahead day by day and achieve what we need. Atleast this autonomy of school deciding their own criteria can be rectified for the time being which would make smoother admission process.

There should not be the point system insted there should be the distance that should matter. Childrens should be appointed though the distance as well as the school should see that Childrens parents are well educated . This means that if the parents lives nearby and the children have the tallent they doesnot have the chance to show the tallents. I'm fedup with this system. We donot have the choice left to give our children the better life that they want to live.
There lies the problem, you want to give better but the system should go as it should be better for all not for lucky ones

Very true. The only addition I want to make here is that there is no guarantee even if the child happens to be second born. Take my case. My first child goes to a reputed convent school. He made it on the basis of selection for chance vacancies through tests, interview etc. Now this particular school has 51 points reserved for christian minorities. In the remaining points, even if a person scores on the neighbourhood (10 points) and sibling(another 10 points), it is highly unlikely that he will make it against the applicants who fall in the category of christian minority.

Sometimes I think, may be selecting a child through interactions, interviews was not that bad! At least you had a feeling that your child/you got an opportunity.

Rahul.

I AGREE WID U

WHATS WRONG WITH HAVING POINTS FOR ALUMNI !!!!!!

I APPLIED IN AROUND 20 SCHOOLS INCLUDING MY ALMA MATER, BUT UNFORTUNATELY I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO SECURE A SEAT FOR MY CHILD ANYWHERE INCLUDING THE SCHOOL IN CENTRAL DELHI OF WHOM IM AN ALUMNI.

I SO WISHED THAT MY CHILD COULD GO TO THE SAME SCHOOL AND I COULD RELIVE MY SCHOOL DAYS AND WALK IN THE SAME CORRIDORS WHERE I'VE SPENT MY ENTIRE CHILDHOOD...... BUT I GUESS I MAY NEVER GET THAT CHANCE.......

WHY IS DERE SO MUCH HULLA BOO ABOUT SIBLING AND ALUMNI POINTS..... IS IT WRONG IF THE SIBLINGS COULD GO TO THE SAME SCHOOL ????

OBVIOUSLY IM NOT SAYING THAT ONLY ALUMNI n SIBLINGS HAVE A RIGHT TO GO TO A PARTICULAR SCHOOL, BUT I WISH TO IMPLY THAT THE ENTIRE SYSTEM IS WRONG, OUR GOVT n ITS POLICIES SUCKS.

THEY JUST KEEP SLEEPING FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR n THEN ABRUPTLY WAKE UP AND FORM NEW RULES EVERY YEAR.

I WISH MY KID WAS BORN A FEW YEARS BACK, MAY BE HE WOULD HAVE HAD A MUCH BETTER CHANCE TO GET ADMITTED OR ATLEAST HAVE HIS NAME IN ATLEAST 1 OF THE LISTS.

OR I WISH I COULD AFFORD TO LIVE IN THE LUTYENS ZONE SO THAT THE NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICY DIDN'T AFFECT THE SCHOOL OF MY CHOICE......

I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE GOVT..... EITHER THEY PROVIDE WORLD CLASS SCHOOLS AT A DISTANCE OF EVERY 5 KMS OR TILL THEN THEY SHOULD JUST LET ME SEND MY CHILD WHEREVER I WANT.................

THE ENTIRE SYSTEM IS FLAWED....... THIS YEAR MY KIDS CHANCES WERE ANYWAY SLASHED BY ONE FOURTH DUE TO EWS...... NEXT YEAR IT WOULD BE SOMETHING ELSE.

I HOPE THE GOVT COMES OUT WITH ANOTHER GROUP NEXT  YEAR CALLED KIDS NOT ADMITTED SECTION (KNAS) AND GIVE RESERVATION TO THEM.

THOUGH A NOBLE THING EWS..... BUT I WISH TO ASK

1. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE STATUS OF THE EWS FAMILY CHANGES, THAT THEY BECOME FINANCIALLY BETTER OFF DURING THE TENURE OF THE KIDS STUDYING IN THE SCHOOL - WOULD THEY CANCEL THE ADMISSION OF THAT KID ???? IF NOT THEN WHY DIS RESERVATION

2. I HAVE MY STRONG DOUBTS AS TO HOW EWS KIDS WOULD GEL WITH THE MIDDLE CLASS or SUPER RICH KIDS IN THE SAME CLASS ROOM --------- NO OFFENCE TO ANYONE BUT ITS DIFFICULT WITH RESPECT TO MANY THINGS.

I DO NOT SAY THAT I HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST EWS.... BUT ITS THE GOVT............. THEY JUST DON'T CARE.

IF TODAY THE GOVT WOULD HAVE WORLD CLASS EDUCATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE THEN THE PRIVATE SCHOOLS WOULDNT HAVE THIS QUOTA SYSTEM.... BUT UNFORTUNATELY THE GOVT IS JUST GOOD AT DIVIDING THE NATION N CLASSES WITH THEIR POLICIES n RESERVATION SYSTEM, MAY IT BE ON THE GROUNDS OF CASTE n NOW ON BASIS OF WHICH SECTION OF SOCIETY U BELONG TO.

I SWEAR I FEEL AWFUL THAT I PAY INCOME TAX TO THIS GOVT .....................

Ditto on taxes and the prevailing system. Two years ago, I could've gotten my kid anywhere (with the exception of DPS) - but now I'm having to wring my hands in despair at not making it into schools which I wouldn't even consider two years back. I wish my son were a girl and I had a broken family and gotten transfered from somewhere. Alas, my kid has the misfortune of being normal, with both parents still together and the worst crime of all - he's a boy! Sorry kid - tough luck .. maybe NOW I should try get a transfer out of this stupid place

SUCH A SORRY STATE OF AFFAIRS & THEY SAY INDIA IS SHINING........

I would say being area specific is an important criteria. But surely that is not so important for Day schools and weekend boarding schools.  So again point criteria needs to be decided by the government, not schools according to specific related issues. And perchance a percentage left for the schools discretion. The rest of this years point category  is totally without sense. How is it that within a couple of years where it was easy to get admission now it is impossible. What happened in these couple of years???
Also the government needs to standardize date of issue and cost  of admission forms and the days the lists come out ,not followed again this year.Maybe all schools should submit to certain government office or agencies online /specific areas and parents collect required schools forms in one go.
@ Sushil: Govt has done enough meddling already. No more!

Four things happened .. an EWS quota wiped out 25% of all seats available.

Schools (and parents) suddenly felt they have a right to seats if the parent is an Alumni or if a brother/sister is already in the school.

Third, all of a sudden you got constrained by neighbourhood .. if you don't have a school within 5 Kms of your home - well, no admissions for your kid!

Finally, the girl child has gained importance to the exclusion of the boy child (if it is a first born boy child .. better think of changing states - no chance of getting into the A list schools .. or B or C list schools, at least in their first list for that matter)

As a result, all available parents applied in ALL schools within 10 Kms from their homes. The schools smelling easy money also started a parallel back door entry (blessed by the Govt in lieu of the EWS quota). In short, a clueless Govt, looking at vote banks from EWS and schools with a free hand to do as they please provided they kept aside 25% seats made merry of a simple Nursery Admissions system
