New Delhi: With many schools releasing their second list of selected candidates, girls appear to have taken away a big slice of the nursery admission pie in the national capital but parents are disappointed and complain that schools have flouted rules.

The results show that on average over 70 percent girls have managed to make into the lists in many schools, while the ratio is more than 95 percent in a reputed school in Dwarka.

The list of about 430 selected children available on the website of St Thomas' School in Dwarka shows that less than 10 boys have been able to make the cut.

"There's hardly any boy in the list. Being a co-ed school it should have been fair with both the genders," said Mandeep Kapoor, who has applied in the school for his son's admission.

"If not, they should have mentioned it earlier, so that we would have not wasted out time in applying in the school," said another parent, not wishing to be named.

"My son has been selected in the school, but I am just reluctant to send my child to the school," she told a news agency.

When asked, the school's admission coordinator Neebha said, "We preferred girl children for admission into nursery classes. The few boys whose names appeared in the list were actually decided by the school management."

The other reputed schools in the city that have given undue preference to girls included Birla Vidya Niketan, Pushpa Vihar; Heritage School, Vasant Kunj, GD Goenka Vasant Kunj among others.

Experts attribute this skewed girl-boy ratio to faults in the points system being followed by schools this year.

"The roots of the problem stem from the defects in the points system. Many schools gave points separately under 'girl child' and 'first child', which have given an edge to girls over boys this year," says Sumit Vohra, founder of online parents forum 'Admissionsnursery.com'."Giving incentives to girls is not bad. But it is needed more in rural set ups not in metros like Delhi," he reasoned.

Ashok Ganguly, the former CBSE chairmen who devised the points system for Delhi schools in 2007, pointed out that lack of a uniform points system is the key reason behind this problems."Unless a uniform selection procedure is being followed strictly across the board, such problems are likely to surface every admission season," he said.

The lists released by schools in the second round had very few names, adding to parents' disappointment.

On seeing the lists containing only eight to ten names, parents alleged that many schools had not considered children who figured in the wait-listed.

"My son was in the wait-list of KR Mangalam World School in GK II. But in the second list out few days ago, there were hardly any names of children from the wait list," said Neha, a resident of that locality.

"When I demanded a clarification, the school officials said there is no rule which suggests that wait-listed candidates will be selected in the second list," she said.

The situation at the school's Vikash Puri branch is also the same, said another anxious parent Taneet Arora.

"Interestingly, the school has put up a list on its notice boards which has only 10 names and all begin with alphabet A," explained Arora, who has applied for his daughter's admission in 24 schools, but is yet to find a place for her.

Meanwhile, authorities in GK-II branch reportedly said, "We will come out with a third list only after the admissions are done. But currently we are admitting only those children whose names have appeared in the two lists."

Parents and experts alleged that several schools have manipulated the selection procedure to suit their interests.

"It appears that such schools are manipulating the selection procedure by encouraging backdoor entries with hefty donations," Vohra said."There are some schools which have given points under sibling as well as first child. How on earth is it possible that a first child can get points for being a sibling," he said, adding that, the Directorate of Education needs to take such complaints seriously.

Ganguly, however, said all the chaos and controversies being witnessed today arise from "the skewed demand and supply ratio.""The government needs to strengthen its schools to address this problem," he added.

#1 The admission system should be centralised  where parents should be given opportunities to prioritise.

#2 The maximum % of reservation under alumni, sibling, religion, EWS, employees..etc should never be allowed to cross 50%

@D Dutta i agee, points system needs to be drastically changed

Majority of people applying for school admissions are of first child general category . Very few of them are able to secure admission in good school (especially boy) because of irrelevent preferance to other categories in point system, who as whole do not come under majority of the applicants but get most of the seats. Because of the faulty point system all the points go to the girls ,alumini ,sibbling, minority n EWS. Seats for these in total should not exceed 50%. First child boy category does not secure place even in waiting list. If parents have not studied from a good school then the present point system makes sure that their children will not go to good school. Draw of lots if transperantly done is still a better option so that every child gets a chance to try his luck. Atleast it provides a uniform platform for all.

Sumanji i dnt agree girls n boyz got d equal opportunity this time as 95% of schools

given points only for first child whether its girl or boy...........

But this is case with ITL too. Their first list includes 45 kids and just one boy in that list. So pretty much same.
Now it boils to the number of kids coming for paid seat.
If this is the situation of every school then what should I do.

My Son didn’t qualified for admission in ASN, Mayur Vihar just because he had 55 points only and qualified candidate had 65 points (if he was a girl he would have also scored this additional 10 points and would have been lucky to have his name in draw). SIBLING/GIRL CHILD and First Born points ... The competition is tough :-)

Yes, I agree.. The whole point system sucks. Every one should have equal right to get education... There should be no reservations & quotas... I don't understand the term 'Management Quota'???? Why the kids of employees be given extra points??? They should also follow the queue of nearest distance..... When we talk about equality of the sexes... why extra points for girl child???

I certrainly feel the whole education system is just sitting idle, watching and enjoying the show of the parents helplessness. the schools are minting money, government is minting money...

@Shibi

I agree with you

Its quite clear that being an alumini or having good neighbourhood points or having sibling points , does not guarantee your admission in a desired school . I met a parent last year whose an alumini of gyan bharti, saket and staying in malviya nagar , her child did not make in first and second lists of the same school . My cousin s first daughter is in GD goenka.she had only filled 1 form of the same school as she was assured to put her second child in the same school has been asked to wait till 28 feb . If seats are available we will consider you . Does parents of first children stand any chance ? Total mockery of selection criteria and points system .
A few days back I had mentioned a school admission handler telling me that children below 3 our not easy to handle and more vulnerable to accidents ... And today there is a shocking news from mumbai that a 3 year old has been run over by a bus . Extremely tragic accident

@ndtv: Mumbai: 3-year-old girl run over by a school bus..

Thanks Tanmeet for highlights

3 years is not at all age for a child to go to school for study.....they should go to interact with other kids, play, enjoy and learn while doing all of this..... The safety of the child comes first, before the education...... I know parents ready to send 3-4 yr old kids to schools which are 12-15 km away.....It is not parents fault, in fact it is totally Govt fault and now I include Court too (I think court got influenced by powerful politicians).... As per me admission age should be 5 years directly in 1st class before that all admissions to be consider in play school only and no extra point should be awarded to a child if he did nursery from same school Montessori....But fare and easy play is out of question now as it never going to happen....at least not until we have corrupt govt and selfish schools like we have right now.
