Too little time for nursery admission’

Shaswati Das, Hindustan Times
New Delhi,

In just two months’ time, schools in the city will flag off their nursery admission process. The Directorate of Education (DoE) had announced last year that schools could start the process from January 2 and wrap up the process by March 31. However, schools maintain that the DoE must

reconsider the window period given to conduct nursery admissions, in order to accommodate other activities that the schools undertake during that period.

“That period is a very busy time for schools. We have to juggle pre-board exams, the school’s final exams, Board exams, as well as the nursery admissions. There must be some sort of leeway for schools because we are swamped by administrative work and that’s all we do for three months at a stretch,” said Ameeta Wattal, vice chairperson, National Progressive Schools Conference.

While schools in the NCR regions have almost reached the end of their admission process, officials at the DoE maintained that Delhi schools would start their process only by the end of the year.

However, schools still worry about ploughing through all the administrative and examination work, while maintaining that the DoE should take into account the load that schools are made to endure in the period from January to March.

“Any rigid stance should be avoided at best. The system should be made convenient for schools so that schools are free to juggle their own commitments as well as cater to the board exams, which happen during the same time,” said Lata Vaidyanathan, principal, Modern School (Barakhamba Road).

While the current academic  admission process was peppered with frequent guideline changes by the DoE, especially regarding the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) admissions, schools claim that the small time-frame given to complete the admission process can be worked around if there are no interruptions.

“We have now learned to work around the system. Even though everything falls at the same time, the winter vacations are best utilised because no teaching activity happens then,” said Ashok Pandey, principal, Ahlcon International School.

“Last year, there were several new guidelines halfway through the admission process. If those are avoided, then we can complete the process smoothly,” she added.

This is a practical problem with the schools and DoE should consider it. Changes in guidelines halfway spoils the pre selection exercise and hardwork done by the schools. Just think, how much time and manpower is involved to scrutinize 4000-5000 forms for want of meagre 300 odd seats. Views of our esteemed Principals are absolutely justified. There should be sufficient time to carryout admissions in a uniform manner.

Why can't DoE work out a procedure like Common Admission Form on the pattern of CAT exams. Let there be a Common Admission Form for the parents in all schools. Let parents fill the form with their order of preferences (not more than 5 schools) and submit with the concerned DDE office. Now DDE should verify the details of parents and forward the list of successful candidates to the concerned school as well as publish it on the website with a time frame to complete admission formalities. School's job is just to admit students as per the list.

I think CAF system should work out efficiently like other competitive exam procedures.

I highly appreciate the views of Mr. Ashok Pandey, a principal who really needs a transparent admission process.

At the same time disagree with the statements of work load and various activities during the time period of admission schedule.

Firstly it is a winter vacation time and less activity in schools. Moreover DOE too extended the winter vacation of schools due to weather conditions.

Schools can go for an option of online application and submission of forms. And its just the point system it would be easier to sort out. No interview or interactions and just verification of documents. lot system for tie points  and for that they can arrange extra staff.

Changing guideline in mid really causes confusion for both parents and school. DOE should come out very clear with the admission guidelines at the earliest.

So sticking to admission process from Jan 1st would be most acceptable by parents and if DOE agree for a common point system with a centralised admission process it will be great relief for all parents.

@ Rahul

Thanks for coming back to this forum. Your feedback about GD Goenka Dwarka most expected in the following thread which would be helpful to parents.

http://www.admissionsnursery.com/forum/topics/parents-can-provide-s...

SVIS would be right choice in your list.

I too second the CAF process... Convenient for parents and schools as well, Quick retrieval n easier for schools to sort out by even eliminating the clerical time taken to type out the data from hard copies of 1000s of forms... and also eliminating the chances of typo error.. which in such a case can be quite unfortunate ...

Nothing much to add to the expert comments .. thanks,

Mr Ashok Panday has a great reputation and he has balanced approached .

Yes through CAP we can save the time and cost by submitting only one application and tracking the status online. It assures that seats under reservation or physically challenged are allotted to them. An Early Childhood Education Commission at National level and Early Childhood Education Boards at State level should be incorporated to look after the needs related to Early Childhood Education, Development and Regulation. All the responsibilites of the school like admission process, fixing fees and salary of staffs can be looked after by the board.  Moreover we can make sure that RTE reaches every child in the country.

I am totally agree with the views of the principals. DOE shall give the guidelines at least one month prior to starting the admission process i.e. 01/01/2013 on all the crucial issues like availability of admission forms, age, point system etc.

According to me, the point system & dates of admission (result, fee deposit, admission withdrawal etc.) in all the schools should be same and weightage should be given in order to (i) distance from the school, (ii) sibling, (iii) first child, (iv) transfer case, (v) single parent, (vi) alumni.

Lets hope the DOE will look into this important matter seriously.

@RAKESH , Why can't they start from 1 dec and wind it up by jan end . 2 years back they started from 15 dec  and the admissions window was for 1month but now window is for 15 days and some schools give forms only for 2-3 days.

I remember St Michael's School, Pusa Road sold manual forms for just 1 hour  since for 50 seats there were daily 1000 online applications. DOE should give strict timings for opening and closing of forms and ensure application available on all days in that window period.

Yes Lathaaji and some other sought convents also sold for 2-3 days that too for limited time.

SFS Janakpuri too had very limited days.
