The Delhi government has finally stepped in to do away with all ambiguity regarding the upper age limit in nursery admissions that start from January 1 next year. In a meeting of the State Advisory Board convened by Education minister Kiran Walia, it was decided that the upper age limit

In the guidelines that were released on December 13, only the minimum age limit, i.e. 3+ years was mentioned.

"There was a lot of ambiguity in terms of age with some schools not admitting students who were close to four years old. There is now a clear guideline on age," said Amit Singla, director, Education.

Another important decision that will affect the admission procedure is the suggestion that neighbourhood be given the maximum points in the points system for admission.

"It was decided in the meeting that schools will give the maximum points for neighbourhood in keeping with the Supreme Court's order that children in the neighbourhood be given the first priority," said MS Rawat, member of the Advisory Board and general secretary of the Federation of Private Schools, Delhi.

The meeting also opened the doors for schools to start second shifts provided they are not run for commercial purposes. Schools have been demanding second shifts in the city for a long time now to meet the demand for admissions.

"The minister has agreed to let schools open second shifts provided we follow the RTE there as well and that the morning staff and principal be different from the evening staff and principal. This step will go a long way in improving the educational prospects of students," said Rawat.

A committee will be formulated to look into the matter opening of second shifts in

private schools, a statement issued by the Delhi Government said.

"That the upper age limit has been fixed is a matter of relief for many parents as a number of schools were not giving admission to kids who were older than three and a half years. This is victory for many such parents. The limit, however, seems a little stringent, especially for those who did not get admission last year and are now 4 years old. Getting admission in KG is very difficult," said Sumit Vohra, founder admissionsnursery.com, a portal for parents.

Thanks to Mr.Vohra who continuously raised his voice in media to fix the upper age limit to remove the chaos among the parents who were sandwitched in this creamy layer. One by one the demands of the parents getting resolved due to focused attention of Mr.Vohra and Admissionsnursery.com his pet.

Now more points for neighbourhood criteria is stressed by DOE and it's upto respective School's hand.

Second shift can be implemented after certain pros and cons for it's immediate demands.

But now parents have to be aware of the timely admission and go by the appropriate age criteria to any good neighbourhood or newly established schools.

Lathaaji, Pls suggest for parents whos children have become 4 yrs + and they did not get admission last year.

we need to brain strom,Mr vohra wanted min 3 yrs max 4.5 or 5 but school lobby told him how can you make  3 year old sit with 5 year old .

MR VOHRA REPLIED ASK CENTRAL GOVT WHO PUT 2 YEARS CUT OFF LIMIT FOR CENTRAL SCHOOLS WHICH STARTS FOR CLASS 1 THAT IS MIN 5 YRS AND MAX 7 YRS ?

Even I expected the same age criteria equal to KVs. But parents who left off the race last year and who is not eligible this year will surely accomodated in a special case based on provisions in RTE Act by giving a written request to DOE Director.

Lathaa ji this sounds like too much of a thing considering that admissions have been so difficult and now to give a request to the DIRECTOR.I mean i am pretty skeptical as to how much of it would be heard in our country..my son would be 4 years and just about 9 days on 31st march 2013 and considering the fresh guidelines, he would only be eligible for admission in kg which anyway is 100 times tougher than nursery..shouldn't they have left margin for at least 1 or 2 months considering that, there is very little difference between a child who is 3 years 11 months and a child who is 4 years and 1 month old..my personal view is that they should have these guidelines implemented from next year, so that the parents who are applying admissions for the second time are not biased against..they should clearly state that these are applicable from next year..by the way these guidelines are not to be seen on doe website..do they take time to update this or a formal order is yet to be passed?

Sure a circular will be notified in a week's time since it has to pass in a orderly manner. DOE has come out at right time I can say before admission as this upper age limit has lot of court litigations and pending for a long time. I know a case were St.Thomas Dwarka accepted a candidate direct to KG. Work load won't be more just her alphabets to read and write along (along with Phonics) and vocabulary on different letters and numbers do little counting upto 50 and write upto 10 or 20 numbers). Give her a lot of colouring practice and hope kids will pick up. If you find a vacant seat in KG go for it. directly.

I feel this upper age limit has only added to the problems of parents and not helped resolve it in any way. Dont think it is in the interests of parents in any manner.

NEW DELHI: Delhi Government's department of education is considering a policy decision that'll fix the upper age limit for nursery admission. And because this issue is in court and there are RTE guidelines to factor in, the Directorate of Education will be making its decision "in consultation with" the human resource ministry.

"We have got feedback from parents who had applied last year and they want an upper age limit. Meanwhile, there's been a court case and the court has asked for the government view," says Amit Singla, director, DoE. "We are thinking of putting some cap," he says, "But it's also a technical issue. There's RTE's requirement of admission into age appropriate class. We have to check the RTE. It's not a simple matter and we are in the process of consulting MHRD. After that we'll finalize our reply."

It is clear now that those of us who did not get/opted not to put in kids in nursery last year, have no option but to go for KG.

Please can you advise

a) Which are the schools in the neighbourhood of Hauz Khas/IIT which would take in children aged 4+ in the KG class?

b) Which are the schools in the neighbourhood of Okhla/Govindpuri  which would take in children aged 4+ in the KG class?

c) Also are dates for KG admission the same as for nursery or does this take place later

Best wishes,
Ruhi
