Mt. Carmel’s move to raise age limit triggers row

The Delhi government may have made it clear that the minimum age for nursery admissions is three years but Mt Carmel School, which is among the most popular schools in the city, is flouting the rule.

The school, located in upscale Anand Niketan, is accepting forms from only those
parents whose children will be above the age of three years and six months in March 2013. The school has, in fact, followed the same policy for the past few years.

A number of parents have complained against the school.

“I fail to understand how the school is flouting the guidelines every year and no action is being taken against it. If the government has set guidelines, it should ensure that all schools follow them,” said a parent on condition of anonymity.

The principal of the school, VK Williams, however, defended his decision.

“According to the Delhi School Education Act, a student should be at least three-and-a-half years old at the time of admission. A letter issued by the directorate of education does not supersede the act and, therefore, we are not doing anything illegal,” Williams said.

“Having studied child development, I know that a three-year-old is not suitable for nursery as the child is too young. I am not swayed by populist uninformed views that a child should go to school early in order to avoid missing a year,” he added.

The Delhi government, meanwhile, has promised action against all schools that flout the nursery admission guideline.

Parents, however are not convinced and are expressing their anger online.

“A number of parents have complained on my website. The school has been flouting the age criteria guidelines from many years. Even after complaints in previous years no action has been taken against them,” said Sumit Vohra, founder admissionsnursery.com.

There shoud be no upper age limit for nursery admission, fixing a cap is atrosity.

same has done with me. when i have been there to purchase the form they refused to provide it

this is one of the good schools in dwarka and due to this age clause we wont be able to fill the form as he will be 3 yrs 6 months on 6 april instead of 31 march. this is really odd one out in terms of age criteria.

Same happen with me in Dwarka. Infact other school St Maary School Junior Branch (St Ave School) has the same criteria

Complaint posted acknowledge I hope all other friends will do the same

thanks Kanwal and Shiv other parents also post their complaint

Hope Mount Carmel is recognised by DOE Delhi. If so it should abide by the guidelines set by DOE Directorate. As Mr.Vohra said Mt.Carmel is flouting the age criteria for few years and as promised DOE should take strict action against the school and pave way for parents who are expecting to apply here.

Sir
Thank you sir
here would like to attract attention on St Gorge's Alaknanda in south Delhi reserved the seat for EWS category only 10% ie only 20 seats out of 200.
Also this Year many schools not giving the receiving for submission of EWS form and most of them being not disclosing the date of Draw.

Sure Santosh,Dont worry we will do the needful

Santosh,Minority schools are supposed to give 15% ( who gave affidavit in the court) and rest have to give 20%. for ews.

Just confirm whether ,they are giving 5 % to non teaching staff than they are not erring

Mt. Carmel school even did not follow the judgment of Hon'ble High Court. Last Year Hon'ble High Court of Delhi clearly said that age should 3+ for Nursery admission. further DoE has also issued the circular but school is not complying and kept 3 and half year age for nursery admission.
