On why "neighbourhood" should be the only criterion in school admissions

1. Distance from the school is the only criterion that affects a child physically. No other criterion affects the child physically. Criteria like siblings, transferable jobs, awardee parents, single parent and so on are just discriminatory.

2. If more children are sent to neighbourhood schools, all neighbourhood schools would have a chance to develop.

3. Eventually, people would become "proximity" conscious than "brand" conscious.

4. Siblings would stand a greater chance of getting into the same school as they will also qualify for the neighbourhood points like their siblings.

@Sandeep. Pls note your words--"Maybe I feel that these particular schools have a teaching system that I subscribe to and for that I am willing to let my child travel 15 km each way" You may be willing to send your child to a school 15 km away, but is your child willing to do that. Also, won't your child have to cut time on other activities

so Mr akshat please tell me the distance of your office from residence... r u working in a nearby lala shop just because it is near,,,come on man grow up....

Sharmaji, is there any need to explain to you that there is big difference between a kid and a man?

ok

Well Sandeep, i think you are able to let your 3 year old travel 20-30 kms. i am not sure how your 3 year old will take to it though (no pun intended please)

if u dont wish to,,, it is your choice..... but please allow us the freedom...

It is not about allowing you the freedom, but it is all about not allowing you to torture your kid

If the child is staying slightly away from the branded school and by slightly it means 5-10 km distance, then that child should get an equal opportunity to apply to that school. Making a primary school child travel more than 10 km a day is grossly inconsiderate. Yes, it's happening - 3 to 4 year olds are traveling a total of 35 km a day. And yes, its wrong.

Shiv, dont want to beat you down but what and how does one define 'staying slightly away from the branded school'. Is it 5km? 10km? 11km? What if I am staying 10.5km from a so called 'branded' school and if the criteria is 0-10km for neighborhood points. Then I will be left behind only because I live a further 500mt away from the school. All I trying to say is that the distance only criteria is quite inappropriate.

Sandeep, we have to arrive at a number and stick to it. Is the guy who scored 33 marks any better than the one who scored 32? So why fail the guy who scored 32?

Fully agree with the points raised by Shiv. Only those people are making noises who have benefited under the existing system.

All those parents who think that by sending their kid to a 'prestigious' school located 20 km away they are doing a great service should be sent to a child psychologist for treatment.
