Even as the Delhi Lieutenant-Governor mulls over the criteria to be decided for nursery admissions in the Capital, school administration is keeping its fingers crossed hoping for autonomy in deciding points based on certain parameters, like previous year. They say in case fixed point system is announced, maximum weightage be given to the neighbourhood parameter to keep parents satisfied.

“Distance deserves the maximum points as it makes the parent and children feel mentally secure. Parents can walk up any time to the school to meet the teacher and the kid also feels secure. According to last year’s criteria, 30 points were given to a child within three kilometre radius, 24 points to kids six kilometres away from school and so on. They should increase the points this time for distance because several kids lose out on this option if other kids gain points on other parameters like sibling, alumni, single parent,” said Ashok Pandey, Principal, Ahlcon International School.

Meanwhile, several private schools waiting anxiously for the announcement of criteria for nursery admissions are biting nails over the possible procedure that they may have to follow.

They expressed their reservations over two points — sibling studying in the same school and alumni — saying that these parameters cannot be implemented by all schools uniformly because some schools are new. “It is tough for schools to take into consideration certain parameters hence, points allotted vary from school to school,” said Ritu Pathak, Principal, GD Goenka School.

“I don’t see any change coming this time too. I think there is nothing wrong with last year’s system. Schools should only make their criteria clear to parents through proper display and rest is fine,” said the Principal of Ambience School.

Stressing on the need for a fixed point system, Sumit Vohra of Admissionsnursery.com however, said, “Schools should not be given freedom to decide what points to give to which category because it leads to discrimination in admission.” However, he agreed to the schools’ demand of more weightage to distance “as it increases the chance of admission of children without sibling and alumni points.”
