NEW DELHI: With the Supreme Court asking the Delhi directorate of education to consider increasing 5 to 6 seats per school to accommodate inter-state transfer cases, a new issue has arisen in nursery admissions.
According to school principals, if they do retrospectively increase the number of seats, the lotteries conducted for the economically weaker section and the girl child will be compromised.
According to the admission guidelines issued by the Lieutenant Governor in December last year, 25% of seats have to be reserved for aspirants from the EWS and 5% for the girl child.
If five or six seats are added, it would be unfair to students under these categories.
“The moment the number of seats are increased, the percentage figures are messed up. The lottery for these seats has already taken place. We will wait for a clear direction from the directorate. According to me, it would be fair to consider all interstate parents if we are considering them at all,” said Ameeta Wattal, principal, Springdales School, Pusa Road.
The suggestion has received mixed response from parents.
“While a number of parents think that the seats should be increased as an extraordinary measure considering the situation we are in today, others are worried that it may imbalance the class and the quality of education might be affected,” said a statement by the Jagrook Parents Association.
Another suggestion that some principals are coming up with is to split the seats between the children with alumni points and those with transfer points. This should only be done in those cases where the directorate has investigated and ascertained that all transfer cases are genuine.
The other danger with increasing seats, according to experts, is that it could lead to more litigation, especially from those parents whose children have got admission under the EWS and the girl child quota.
After the Supreme Court directive to consider increase 5-6 seats in schools for nursery admissions, education experts said that the decision would help a number of children but on the other hand some parents are saying that the category should be scrapped entirely.
According to education expert, Mr Sumit Vohra, the student-teacher ratio would not be affected, as most of the private and unaided schools have classrooms divided into different sections, "even if one student is added in every section of nursery, there is a possibility that it would neither alarm the student-teacher ratio and nor any burden on resources as every school has minimum 5 to 6 sections in nursery." However, the court has given time to the Directorate of Education (DoE) to interact with schools and then go back to them with an answer if they can increase the seats by 2:30 pm tomorrow.
"So for DoE to go back to some schools and come out with an answer is practically impossible in this time frame, had they only asked DoE only without specifically asking their counsel to consult schools to whether they can increase the seats or not, would have been a different story and therefore I feel it will be easier for DoE to reply no to the court. I hope this is not the case," said Yash, a parent seeking nursery admission. Vohra added, "Specifically around 600 kids can be accommodated in 100 schools and 500 schools would be able to accommodate all the transfer cases and DoE has 1,300 schools. But DoE has to take the final call."

Suman ji, 1st list, 2nd list, 3rd list, 4th list every thing is for 70 pointers, And above all Transfer points not coming back :) every thing is a ++ for 70 pointers."
LG was the main flop person behind this mess. I don't understand why SC asked to consult LG again on this issue. Complete Edn department was at fault for many reasons and again consultation from the same and that too within 1 day rather not even 24 hours. I doubt rationalization of facts and theory. SC did not find any other body to consult except the LG? What a system it is?
Maharam Ji LG is the final signing authority for all departments of Delhi including DOE that’s why his name is used everywhere, whereas the whole process of ideas is done by the department itself which is DOE here but to pass any file it has to be taken to LG for his final approval and signatures.
there is still confusion where 70 pointers will go who havent been selected yet anywhere
where will the kids of those parents go who neither studied from delhi schools nor they have any sibling studying being first chil absolute nonsence

@Rahul..sorry to say but the worst effected are the 70 pointers. all those with siblings and alumini points have more or less got their placements done. Everybody knows abt IST which makes no sense. I have applied in 19 school and i am a 70 pointer , and whatever draws/list that have come up till date only and only 3 school have made draws for 70 pointers this was till the 1st list was out. Rest of the schools did not even considered 70 points as if these points reflects the IQ level of the kids they are admitting. We all schools have to derive some system to take kids in this case a min quota should be there to adjust the 70 pointers. Let see what the subsequent list will have in store of us.
Well Suman, had I been you would have already done one of the following:
1. Move to NCR school
2. Get admitted to some minority school like frank anthony etc. which are above DOE regulation
3. Continue with Nursery at play school only. Good play schools do have excellent nursery and kindergardens.
If you have not done anything of above till now, I am not sure cribbing like this will neither help u nor your sweet child.
