Unlike last year, when there was no upper age limit for admission to nursery, this year may have a upper age limit for nursery admissions. An advisory council, constituted for the purpose, has recommended a cap on the age for admission.
“The lower limit for admission is already fixed at three years, but there was no upper age limit for admission. Logically, it makes sense for children of a particular age group to be in a particular class. So we have recommended an upper age limit of four years,” Padmini Singla, director of Directorate of Education, said.
Singla clarified that it was only a “recommendation” and that “nothing has been finalised yet”. “It is one of the suggestions we have given. But nothing has been finalised yet. It has to be approved by the L-G first,” she said.
If the recommendation is passed, only children between the age group of 3 and 4 years will be eligible for admission — an issue which has left many parents, who were unable to secure admission for their wards into a good school last year, apprehensive.
“Due to the mess over nursery admission last year — there were a lot of court directions — a lot of parents were unable to secure admission for their children and were hoping to secure a seat this year. One is left to wonder where all those children will go now, since they would become ineligible for admission. To compound the problem, schools hardly have any vacancies in kindergarten. The government should look at creating a provision for these children,” Sumit Vohra, founder of nurseryadmissions.com, a parent portal, said.
“I had to admit my son to a playschool last year in the hope that at least this year, I’ll be able to put him in a good school. With the option of enrolling in nursery likely to be ruled out, I would hardly have any choice left this year too,” Sheetal Grover, a parent, said.
