Schools stick to points

WITH the framing of admission policy now being entirely their prerogative, private schools in the Capital have decided to continue with the point system.

“ In our representation to the state government, we had asked them to let us continue with last year’s system.

The autonomy given to us by the education minister allows us to do just that. All members of our federation are in favour of the point system,” R. P. Mullick, chairperson of the Federation of Schools — an association of over 300 schools in the Capital — said.

Several member schools of the Nation Schools Progressive Conference ( NSPC) — comprising 100 private schools — too said they will stick to the point system.

“ Though I can’t speak on behalf of the NSPC, we will go ahead with the point system as it is transparent and does not violate the spirit of the RTE Act,” L. V. Sehgal, principal of Bal Bharati Public School in old Rajendar Nagar, said.

R. C. Jain, president of the Delhi State Public Schools Management Association ( DSPSMA), said: “ Both schools and parents were happy with the way admissions were being done on the basis of points. Why change that?” The DSPSMA comprises more than 1,000 private schools.

Though the parent community seemed more or less satisfied with the guidelines, some were apprehensive over the possibility of schools misusing their autonomy.

“ The directorate of education should have given schools a definite method of admission rather than leaving it entirely up to them. That leaves scope for the schools to manipulate the system,” Sumit Vohra, who runs an online portal, admissionsnursery.com , said.
