THE CENTRAL Board of Secondary Education ( CBSE) has issued an advisory to all its 10,000- plus affiliated schools for 2010 with a special pointer on child rights issues.

The New Year advisory from CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi has asked schools to treat children sensitively. He has also told the schools to stand by students in case of “ external pressure”. Joshi has advised schools to lay more emphasis on imparting knowledge on life skills, higher order thinking skills, continuous and comprehensive evaluation ( CCE) and value education.

D. R. Saini, principal of Delhi Public School R. K. Puram said, “ Schools need to be aware of the sensitive needs of their children because it is very important for their holistic development.” The board has also said all Class IX “ summative” or end- of- theyear final examinations under CBSE schools will be in multiplechoice format from this year.

The CBSE is all set to introduce the CCE scheme for classes VI to VIII. The board will conduct workshops for teachers to help them with the CCE scheme.

Bharti Sharma, principal of Amity International, Saket, who is one of the authors of a handbook on CCE for teachers, said: “ The CCE scheme brings about a paradigm shift from examination to effective pedagogy.” The schools have been advised to set aside 30 minutes a day for physical fitness.

The schools have been asked to set aside at least two periods in a fortnight for participation of students in health and wellness clubs, eco clubs, science clubs and dramatics.
