The wisest card that parents can play in the coming nursery admission procedure is to apply to as many schools as possible because even if they score in categories like neighbourhood, they might fall out on other categories. As many schools will give varying points to different categories, while a child may be awarded alumni points, he/she may lose out on neighbourhood, hence the highest chance of admission into nursery school for a child is to apply to as many schools as possible. Furthermore, the categories are also varying in different schools across the city like some schools are giving points for first child and single parents, while others are giving points to minorities and not to first child.

Principal of Springdales School at Pusa Road, Ameeta Wattal said, “Parents should kept their options open and apply to as many schools as they can. It is better to be on the safe side”. Similarly, principal of Springdales School at Dhaula Kuan, Jyoti Bose said, “The parents should thoroughly go through the websites of the school before applying in a school. This may not assure admission of their ward but will surely help the parents to ascertain their chances”. The registration for admissions in Springdales School will be carried from January 3-10, 2011. The Springdales School is giving points to categories like sibling, alumni, minority, girl child, transfers. Whereas, others schools like GD Goenka Public School, Vasant Kunj are giving points to single parents and first child but not minorities and transfer cases.

In the Kalka Public School, the sale and submission process of forms will be carried from January 3-15 they are not giving points to first child but is giving points to transfer cases and girl child. Meanwhile, Father Angel School at Gautam Nagar and Sanskriti School are giving no points to transfer cases. Sumit Vohra, founder of admissionsnursery.com said, “Parents are totally dissatisfied and confused, as the schools have been given freehand to formulate their categories. The situation was much better last time. Now, even the transparency is not assured, as in case of tie of points between two applicants, the schools will conduct a draw system.” The principals of both Springdales School said that in case of a tie they will conduct a draw of lots”.

Rahul Jain, father of a three-year-old said, “Because of no uniformity in the categories of different schools, we will apply to double the number of schools, which we had planned earlier. Our expenses will definitely shoot up because of this unlimited freedom given to the schools, but we are helpless”.

On the other hand, parents also expressed their annoyance because of the ambiguity prevailing over the age for child in nursery admissions. Sarita Kumar, a resident of East Delhi and mother of a three-year-old said, “I am so confused. I wanted to get my son admitted to schools of my area. I would have got points for neighbourhood too but some schools in my area have kept four as the age criteria for the admissions”. Notably, two schools which have kept their age as four are Ahlcon Public School in Mayur Vihar and Kalka Public School in Alaknanda.
