No nursery admissions in private Delhi schools till final verdict, orders court

Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday ordered private schools in Delhi to not allow nursery admissions till it gives a final verdict on the validity of government's 2010 notification and whether it follows the Right to Education Act. "Schools cannot formulate their own admission policies," the court further ordered.

The notification allows schools in Delhi to formulate their own guidelines and preferences based on religion, sibling and alumni to admit children in nursery. The court had earlier said the Centre and the Delhi government cannot "dilute" RTE Act by allowing unaided private schools to use their own criteria for nursery admissions.

The court had also said the ongoing nursery admission process in Delhi would be cancelled if it decides to "quash" the notification issued on December 15, 2010 by the Directorate of Education (DoE) on behalf of Delhi government.

People are unduly worried about the whole process starting again. New session starts in April. There is ample time to restart the process again. Restarting the process doesn't mean filling forms again. What would be done again is shortlisting of candidates and draw of lots. In cases where the fees have been deposited, that can be refunded. The court is acting at the right pace. Important matters like these should not be decided in a hurry.

Very good decision by HC. WELCOME.

i have apply 3 DPS schools , but i can't do admission in DPS because all seats has been filled by Alumni and Sibling.

Then why have neighbourhood be the criteria also ?? Only because xyz owns house in posh delhi, make someone elegible for that school ?

So you are saying that people from not so posh colonies are able to send their children to posh schools in posh colonies? Who gave you that idea?

Half of the seats from the seats should be allocated to neighbouring children using a draw of lots. The remaining should be open to the rest using the same draw of lots.

agreed.. even distance should be removed..

schools are playing on this too.. some keeping as little as one km as limit.. how does it matter if distance is 1 km or 2 km as long as its not too far.. even parents understand that kids shouldn't travel a lot .. but  believe parents are the best to judge whats best for their child..

or even this criteria should be standardised.. and not dependent on school management

Distance should not be removed. This is the only criteria that directly affects the child. When more and more children go to neighbourhood schools, the neighbourhood schools will also develop.

People wont worry about brands but proximity.

I don't think that the process will be done all over again. Since all the schools have distance points as criterion, all they have to do is neglect all other criteria and reassess our applications. This much exercise the schools must be made to do, if no other punishment is levied upon them, for manipulating admission process.

Vaibhav, What about parents who could not apply due to Upper age criteria or Due to sibling alumni factor in their neighbourhood.HC might give some days extra.

I believe that the upper age criterion was removed at the initial stages itself, correct me if i am wrong.

I agree with you, that those parents who refrained from submitting application to any school, fearing short points, must be given another opportunity.

No vaibhav ,it was not removed.school specific. most schools had upper cut off of 4 yrs on 31 Mar 2013

u dont start an innings in death overs.... at this stage, HC's actions are absurd.... it only shows that they dont seriously intend to provide permanent and feasible solution...

This news brings some cheer to us. Not happy with the present system of education where a 3-4 yr kid has to face his or her parents struggling for a nursery admissions. This is really unfortunate for a nation having more than 30% youth population, where the entry to formal schooling (nursery) is compared to even IIT or Harward admission.
