Delhi: minimum age for nursery admissions to remain at 3 yrs Mallica Joshi, Hindustan Times New Delhi, September 02, 2013

The minimum age for nursery admissions in Delhi is set to remain at three years. A special committee set up by the Delhi Directorate of Education (DOE) decided the current system is the best one to follow. The committee was set up after the Delhi High Court asked the DOE to respond to a public interest litigation that said there was no clarity on the minimum age for admissions to nursery class in the Right to Education Act. The nine-member committee decided that a child should be a minimum of 3 years old to get admission in nursery class in Delhi. This rule is currently being followed in various schools. The upper age limit is three years, 11 months and 30 days. The court had asked the DOE to respond on the issue of admission age in nursery as the Right to Education Act only talks about students between the age of six and 14 years. Since nursery admissions does not come under the RTE act, some parents had complained about the lack of clarity. "The committee decided that three years is the appropriate age for admissions in nursery as a number of schools over the country are following this rule. This is to make sure children in Delhi are on a par with those in the rest of the country," said MS Rawat, principal, Mayur Public School. Rawat is also a member of the committee. The issue of age was hotly debated as a number of schools feel that three years is too young for a child to go to school. Some schools also give preference to older children.

Hello Sakshi

Thanks for the information. Would like to know the probability in Delhi (specially for Dwarka Area)  Schools for my child completing 3 yrs in April mid. (19th).  Does schools count 31 march as cut off for 3 yrs ?

Thanks

Deepak

Deepak,They are very strict about cut off date 31mar 2014.

I do not really see much sense in schools being so strict about cutoff date of 31 mar 2014 - this is leading to a complete year waste for children who will be completing 3 yrs in Apr/May/Jun of that year. In a realistic sense, the course curriculum picks up speed only from July onwards (i.e. when schools re-open after summer vacation) - so as long as the child completes 3 yrs till Jun-Jul of that session, the schools should be able to admit the child in nursery in that session itself.

I have seen schools in some other cities having this cut-off date criteria releaxed and thus why in Delhi/NCR there is so much fuss about 31 mar 2014 being the cut-off date?

Great...!

My daughter is going to complete 3 years in first week of Januray, 2014. In Faridabad all the school have different criteria for nursery admission. Some schools are considering minimum 3 years and some 3.6 years.

This is high that DPS Sector-19 is considering minimum age 3 years for nursery admission while DPS, Sector-81 is strict on 3.6 years should be minimum age.

Is there any way to know the correct criteria in Faridabad?

Seeking suggestion from the members of forum what to do.
