Delhi: Nursery admissions turn into a nightmare

A new system, the multiple lotteries and point system, was introduced to improve transparency and fairness in school admissions.

New Delhi The nursery admissions in Delhi schools this year have turned into a nightmare for both parents and schools.

A new system, the multiple lotteries and point system, was introduced to improve transparency and fairness. Sadly it has turned into a lottery game.

Under the new guidelines of the Leiutenant Governor, schools have to conduct a lottery for the economically weaker sections (25 per cent quota), the general category (70 per cent which would include the five per cent girl child quota) and the staff quota (five per cent quota).

Apart from this, there is another complicated point system for the general category that allows: 70 points if you live within the eight km radius of the school, 20 points if you have a sibling in the school and five points each for transfer and alumni categories.

That's not all. Schools are complaining that they are getting thousands of applications for a few seats. At Vasant Valley School, 3612 kids applied for just 68 seats in the general quota, while in the girl child category, 1065 applications were received for just four seats. At DPS RK Puram, 2000 kids applied for 20 odd seats.

However, the problem does not end there. In fact, the biggest issue is turning out to be the transfer system. Several parents are allegedly creating fake transfers by shifting to the neighbourhood of their choice so that they can get admissions. In the process, those living in the area, lose out.

Tarun Gupta, who lives close to the Vasant Valley School, says "Right across the road is Vasant Valley School, but I have not even been considered for the lottery system because I only have the points for distance, not the extra five points for transfer."

In fact, at the Heritage School in Delhi, almost all those who have made it to the list are those who shifted base.

Sumit Vohra founder of AdmissionsNursery.com says, in all schools, transfer cases are taking up anything between 40% to 75% seats.

seems that there is no seats for delhite kids...poor state that v belong to Delhi

So what will parents do who have just 70% in their kitty or its their first child  as we have not been called by any school except for 5% girl child lottery . I have a question , say for big branded school like DPS people like us cant get admissions in these school ever as it is circle started with alumni points then siblings and then next generation of the same people . Schools like DPS should not accept applications from non DPS quota , why to waste time and give false hopes ........???????????????????????

Well said Kanika... instead of giving false hope they should not accept the forms. Every passing day is a nightmare for us... until we secure a seat in a school ... forget good school or school of your choice :-)

true dps should add one more criteria only who linked with dps will get admission in dps

NOW THIS IS CALLED TRANSPARENCY I DON'T THINK THAT MY DAUGHTER CAN GET ADMISSION IN ANY SCHOOL.

I HAVE FILL FORMS IN 20 SCHOOLS. I HAVE FIRST SINGLE GIRL CHILD.WHERE FROM I GET HER SIBLING. MY WIFE AND ME BOTH STUDIED IN GOVT. SCHOOL SO WE DON'T HAVE ANY ALUMNI I AM DOING MY BUSINESS SO I DON'T HAVE TRANSFER NUMBER. NOW CAN ANY BODY TELL ME WHAT WILL I DO IF MY DAUGHTER IS NOT SELECTED IN ANY SCHOOL CAN'T I GET ANY SINGLE SCHOOL WHERE I CAN GET ADMISSION WITHOUT THIS NIGHT MARE....................

montfort school ashok vihar is not following the distance criteria guidelines properly. they r giving 70 points to only those students who r just 2 km frm school. other are getting 60, 50 and 40 points res. what is this?

Samita... its a minority school and can have there own guidelines.

Hello Mr Vohra, Thanks for bringing up these issues to the media houses.

What is your gut feeling on what will happen ? Is LG or DOE going to consider the voice of parents ?

regards

Dear Nitin

As per my inside information.. i have been told that because of media highlighting it in big way..we will have some notification !!

(But i don't go on hearsay..am waiting for notice)

Dear all..I m absolutely sure that basis d fight put in mr vohra n considering plight n woes of 90% genuine parents who are in deep trouble with their angels not even called for draws, DOE & Honorable LG would definitely recommend orders to the effect of taking care of this transfer menace..keeping fingers crossed...AMEN !!

:((

only few hundred candidate holds the transfer point and they blocked all the school all over Delhi for first list. Seems second list will going to play important as a candidate with transfer point get admission in one school only. Let us hope for the best in second list (specially for those who got 70 points).

Absolutely true maneesh. it have become a big headache as we fall under " d" grade category with only 70 points and lot of good schools have shortlisted kids with minimum 75 points, absolute rubbish as having a first child is some kind of a curse.
