Delhi: Nursery admissions turn into a nightmare

A new system, the multiple lotteries and point system, was introduced to improve transparency and fairness in school admissions.

New Delhi The nursery admissions in Delhi schools this year have turned into a nightmare for both parents and schools.

A new system, the multiple lotteries and point system, was introduced to improve transparency and fairness. Sadly it has turned into a lottery game.

Under the new guidelines of the Leiutenant Governor, schools have to conduct a lottery for the economically weaker sections (25 per cent quota), the general category (70 per cent which would include the five per cent girl child quota) and the staff quota (five per cent quota).

Apart from this, there is another complicated point system for the general category that allows: 70 points if you live within the eight km radius of the school, 20 points if you have a sibling in the school and five points each for transfer and alumni categories.

That's not all. Schools are complaining that they are getting thousands of applications for a few seats. At Vasant Valley School, 3612 kids applied for just 68 seats in the general quota, while in the girl child category, 1065 applications were received for just four seats. At DPS RK Puram, 2000 kids applied for 20 odd seats.

However, the problem does not end there. In fact, the biggest issue is turning out to be the transfer system. Several parents are allegedly creating fake transfers by shifting to the neighbourhood of their choice so that they can get admissions. In the process, those living in the area, lose out.

Tarun Gupta, who lives close to the Vasant Valley School, says "Right across the road is Vasant Valley School, but I have not even been considered for the lottery system because I only have the points for distance, not the extra five points for transfer."

In fact, at the Heritage School in Delhi, almost all those who have made it to the list are those who shifted base.

Sumit Vohra founder of AdmissionsNursery.com says, in all schools, transfer cases are taking up anything between 40% to 75% seats.

Do not create false images in front of your eyes.  Due to this Transfer points, I have personally visited several schools and have found that there is no space even in first and second wait list for people with 70 points.

Please plan to move outside Delhi, as Delhi Govt does not recognize delhi citizens they like citiezens who comes from other states.

Everyone is saying that 90% of the cases of interstate transfer is fake, then why LG / DOE is not removing this additional 5 points for inter state.

This will help to make a neat and clean system.

Only one time re-draw will again bring all the parents a new reason to live with their kids in delhi.

Manoj, don't think negative, there are around 4,50,000 applications. If we took average of 10 schools applied by each candidate then only 45000 candidates across Delhi and I guess there should be similar number of seats in all Delhi schools. Only problem is the choice of school where the parents are willing to get admissions for their ward.

In that way we have to be optimistic for 10s of rounds of draws also and cannot say how many days off you have to take to visit each school multiple times.. as if it is nursery admission which is every thing to do with for our lives. This system will encourage parents to ask schools for ghoos lo admission do.. on the name of transparency and nobleness who want to be hanged??

This guideline has tuned out to be  the worst  guideline for nursery admission. Nothing left to think....

Transfer cases are really pathetic for Delhities... There seems to be no hope for getting admission of my kid even a single school due to these extra 5 points.

Very bad and pathetic, for Delhi kids no seats! no intelligence goes into making the rules! I am so stressed about my daughter's admission, 70 is new zero!

its a doomsday for us! but still mera bharat mahan lolz

All parents, we need to sit on some dharna,

well said..this point system should have been only 30 point based as 70 point==0 point. shame what a system in place..

@kanika

try dps panipat if it is so important to get into a dps !

:D

But some parents are going to NCR already as  few very good schools.

I m in depression i have a first daughter she is not getting admission in any school please do something

Dear all, as regards this blog of nightmare, we have voted in favour of DPS and advertised for DPS without paying. Most of the comments are based on DPS and 2-3 other schools. Do u think all other schools are bad, not at all?

What i mean let us join together and reach out our hands to LG only finding a solution. To me, it seems nothing favourable for the parents at this stage. However, instructions like DPS RKP eill definitely create favourable situation for genuine parents because fake will hardly turn back with proofs, thereby creating opportunities for others as well.

lets decide a date and go to meet LG,

we should ask him to take responsibility to get our kids admitted to decent school or ask him what we should do. I do not mean every one should go to DPS ,modern and likewise but a good school.
