While the Delhi government has tightened its grip over private schools and laid down strict rules for admissions to nursery, private schools in neighboring Noida are blatantly violating Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, by conducting interviews of students, as well as their parents, for admission.

Admission tests and interviews are considered as tools for profiling children and their families, therefore, conducting such a process are prohibited. Section 13(1) of the RTE Act, provides that while admitting a child, no school or person shall subject the child or his/her parents to any 'screening procedure,'while section 2(o) of the Act defines the term as the 'method of selection for admission of a child, in preference over another, other than a random method.'

However several parents, who had been denied nursery seats for their three-year-olds in prestigious schools in Noida, alleged that in contravention to the rules, children were asked asked to identify fruits, colours and flowers. They were also asked to recite poems during the "interaction."

"My son was asked to identify geometrical shapes and colours during his interview at two private schools in Noida. Despite giving all the answers correctly, his name was not there in the list of selected candidates of both the schools," said a parent, who did not wanted to be named.

Some parents also alleged that schools have been asking "inappropriate" questions like their financial status, working hours and lifestyles.

"I was asked about my working hours during the interview in Bal Bharti School. I was then told that I won't be able to take care of my child's studies as I work for long hours," said another parent whose daughter was also denied admission in at least three schools.

However, Asha Prabhakar, the Principal of Bal Bharti School, denied the allegations saying, "those who could not get admissions are levelling false allegations against the school. We have limited seats and can't give admission to everyone." She, however, did not deny the fact that interviews were being conducted.

Explaining the reason behind these irregularities, Sumit Vohra who runs an admission portal, said, "In the absence of any regulatory body in Noida and Ghaziabad there is no fixed criteria of admission in these schools. There is no fixed age bar, calender and fee refund process. Every school is setting its own rules. Most of these school do profiling and screening of parents and children which is against the RTE Act."

"There is an immediate need of a regulatory body to fix the admission norms here. Otherwise parents continue to suffer," he added.

Totally agreed. Prestigious schools like Amity Vasundhra gives 7 page odd questionnaire to parents asking grandparents educational qualifications too...does it really matter for child's admission?? Bal bharti brij vihar teachers kept grilling child to speak in front of them...its totally child's mood n wish to speak or not ...they r only 2 1/2 years old at present. We cant push them. One of friend's daughter had horrible experience at bbps brij vihar...teacher asked nanny to snatch clip n remove shoes of girl child just to hear her screaming!! Isnt it disgusting?? Is this the way to "interact"?? The mother didnt complain at principal offce out of generosity. But this issue needs to be addressed seriously....they just cant grill children n parents like mental tortures.

Very valid  points

Thanks God i didnt filled Bal Bharati, i have heard very bad reviews pertaining to interactions there

OMG this is pure torture! This is when the parents are there!

Very true. I have gone for interview on the name of interaction for 8 schools in Noida only and they were really like drilling parents for 15-20 minutes lots of questions, which includes our job profile, working hours, language we communicate at home, with scenario based questtions between kid parent and school.  does she go to daycare, working hours of mom , who takes care of child at home etc. which were not genuine ... bcoz why they forget that even they are working as a teacher and all females in this world will not become teacher who has fix hour 8 :00 to 12:00 job.

Although my daughter was selected for all schools except Amity Noida because I felt like they have isssue with working moms so people need to lie at that time that my kid stays at home with grandparents etc. But we frankly told them that she is going to daycare and when her grandma is here than only some times she stays at home.

Such question disturbed us a lot, for this we are not raising our daughter and sending her to school. In future she also needs to work for her career so what school will build her if their mind sets are like this that working moms don't give time to kids.

Being a working mom I feel proud that I am an example for my daughter that how to be independent and work for our career and family together. But these schools are just opposite of that.

At Balbharti they asked us that what you have taught to your child whatever she respond  for questions is result of her good playschool, then I responded her that what I taught her which only a mother can teach her kids not any school.

And asking kids  shapes, colours, rhymes, ABC, 123 etc. and giving chocolate to check how child response with thankyou, speaking one sentence in multiple ways to understand whether child understand english or not.

Better is schools should tie up with good daycare facilities and stop asking such questions and make a child

grow in good environment where  they wont feel that my mom is working and I am neglected. These days parents  give full time to kids despite of all obstacles and work place issues, now people are more aware of such thing and there is no need to pin point such things by schools. Hope they should raise their mentality too as per their school standards.

Exactly Sakshi, i second that notion.

Some of these school still have mentality which was there 10-12 years back. It needs to change everyone is working now days even them.

I completely agree with Sakshi Jain..I dont understand the criteria of selection process, even though the schools which are nearer to our house,we are not even shortlisted for interaction and they have strict distance criteria of 3 or 5 Km.

The admission process is really torture for parents as well as kids.

Basically with more than 2.5k applications for around 100 - 250 seats this is bound to happen with many of the parents trying those 250 seats in so called top schools.

I believe centralized admissions where the parents just have to fill have a single form and all the schools should take the data in from there and select the candidates based on points system (varying on alumni, distance etc.) under the control of a central authority would rather be more convenient both for schools and parents.

Very true Aditya

it is demand Vs supply in so called  top schools.....

we never know in coming 12-14 years of child education time frame which schools will stand in test of time.....

Colleges do that. Why not schools. Just that there is no question of merit in 3-year olds.

Same has happen with me....my daughter has given all the answers for like 15mins including shapes colors rhymes and many more things ,still she has not been selected . I feel this is just stupidity. Noida school rules are just a crap.

I just heard of a written examination for Nursery Admission in a prestigious school in Ghaziabad, which will be held in November. They have even provided a syllabus. The child should be able to WRITE alphabets, A to Z and numbers 1-40. That beats NOIDA methods I'd say... Admission in a top school has become a matter of prestige for parents. Forget school teachers, those who are hoping for their child's admission in that school must be grilling their own kids right now.
