Following guidelines from the directorate of education (DoE) on December 15, most schools have decided to admit children through the tried-and-tested 100-point system with neighbourhood likely to be one of the most important criteria for admission. So, it will be only wise for the parents to apply in schools located close to their residence.

With the right to education being implemented from the new session, schools were supposed to adopt an admission procedure which did not amount to screening. DoE in its guidelines, gave a freehand to schools to follow either the point system or a draw of lots for nursery admissions. But the draw of lots will only be for the EWS admissions in most schools, once the admission procedure starts from January 1. "We will go with the point system based on our experience over the last three years. The government said there should be no discrimination in the admissions, so we will no longer have parameters like parents' qualification or alumni. We will admit children based on parameters like neighbourhood, alumni, sibling, special needs and transfer case," said M I Hussain, principal, DPS Mathura Road.

But the school is giving the highest weightage to neighbourhood that carries 25 points. "But we will consider children within a radius of 15km under the neighbourhood parameter this time as against 10km last year. We want to reach out to better number of children," Hussain said. In the west, Bal Bharati School, Ganga Ram Hospital Marg, has decided to award as much as 30 points to neighbourhood, considering a distance of up to seven kilometres. The school's other parameters would be sibling, alumni, girl child, special needs and first child.

"Though the RTE hasn't given any specific guidelines on neighbourhood or the admission criteria, but it does mention that government will create schools within one kilometer radius in each neighbourhood. So, area is a strong consideration for us too. Besides, we are going with the point system as it is transparent. Parents can calculate their points and know their chances in a school," said L V Sehgal, principal, Bal Bharati School.

Though a petition had been filed in the Delhi high court against the DoE guidelines, a hearing on it will be held only in March. In such a case, schools say it's best for them to stick to a system which is transparent and not discriminatory. R K Sharma, principal, Ahlcon Public School, Mayur Vihar, said, "There was also some confusion on the age criteria, so we have decided to keep 4+ as the age for admission. Besides, we are keeping a maximum of 30 points for neighbourhood, as we think it's best for little children not to travel too much to reach the school."
