The Delhi government has announced the nursery admission schedule to be followed by schools for the academic session 2011-12. The increased autonomy of schools to decide the nursery admission policy and absence of a structured admission schedule had the parents worried about the admission process. The sale of form begins from January 1 and ends on January 15. “Contrary to some media reports, there is a common schedule this year and all the schools have to abide by it,” said Education Minister Arvinder Singh on Monday. The schedule will be uploaded on the Directorate of Education’s website by Wednesday. He also added that if any school fails to follow it the Directorate of Education would take action against the school. Like last year, this year, too, schools have the flexibility to draw their schedules within the given time period. “Yes, we were informed about a common schedule. That will make the admission process simple both for the parents and the schools. Last year, too, we worked within a schedule. To avoid confusion after looking at the school schedules, parents should draw a list of schools in advance and then apply,” said Jyoti Bose, principal, Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan. Parents, too, were relived at the news. “This is great news. As it is schools have so much freedom to decide the criteria and if there were no schedule, it would be chaotic. Such a schedule will ensure that schools have to complete the entire admission process within a time period,” said Pallabi Biswal, who is seeking admission for her three-year-old son. Schools have the liberty to decide the criteria based on the nature and number of applications received and the objectives of the school on a ‘rational, reasonable and just basis.’ The Delhi government has banned child profiling based on parental educational qualifications and income. Apart from this, the admission policy decided by the schools should be placed by the school in the public domain, given wide publicity and explicitly stated in school prospectus. The schools cannot test or interview any child or parent falling within or outside the categories. Most schools have indicated that they will follow a mix of point and lottery system.

Admission autonomy raises fears

THE COMING nursery admissions season, which begins after New Year holidays, is headed for chaos.

Free to fix their own admission calendar this time, private schools are considering entirely different schedules that could turn the application process into a nightmarish experience for parents.

Springdales School, Pusa Road, is likely to sell admission forms in the first week of January, while Bal Bharati Public School, Ganga Ram Hospital Marg, will give parents 10 days to register admissions.

Similarly, Ahlcon International School (AIS) starts sale of forms from January 3 and will give parents two weeks to register. The Delhi Public School, RK Puram, will set aside a month for the process.

The unsynchronised admission dates are bound to keep parents school hopping. Till last year schools were following a common schedule suggested by the state government to avoid this.

Last year, nursery admissions in the Capital began on December 15. The last date for receipt of applications was set as January 15 and the government even suggested dates for the announcement of results.

Schools were allowed to deviate from this schedule, but had to give valid reasons to the directorate of education before doing it.

This time, however, schools can fix any date between January 1 and March 31 for the admissions.

Private schools are happy with the increased autonomy and see nothing wrong in following different admission schedules.

“ Having a common calendar complicates things for parents. They are left with little option as they have to submit forms to different schools simultaneously,” Ameeta Wattal, principal of Springdales School said.

Parents, though, beg to differ. “ Some popular institutions sell forms for just two days. To apply, a parent must understand the school’s admission policy. A fixed schedule, during which forms are sold across schools for a set time, saves parents much trouble,” Nitin Rajpal, a parent from Dwarka, said. parent of admissionsnursery.com

With schools declaring results on different dates, parents could also face problems in seeking a refund of admission fee from a school in case their child gets admission in an institution of their choice at a later date.

“ Schools usually allow a refund within a month of admission. With different admission schedules, it is possible that a school of my choice announces its results a month after I have paid fees in another school as a precautionary measure,” said Sumit Vohra, the founder of admissionsnursery. com , a portal that helps parents with problems in school admissions.

“ A fixed calendar would have made things easier for parents and I favour it.But since schools have been given the flexibility, everyone will fix dates according to their convenience,” AIS principal Ashok Pandey said

Parents interested for DPS Mathura Road.

Dont get confused as regards DPS Mathura Road. Online forms from 1-1-2011 to 15-1-2011. Last Date to submit the form 16.1.2011. EWS forms will be available at school gate between 9 am to 11 am on all working days. For further information dial 011-43399234. Read instructions carefully and avoid duplicate submission. Very Very strict this year. Spellings of names /surnames and DoB will matter most in rejection.If birth certificate is not having surname, plz get it done now, otherwise face drama.

Again schools are going their ways.There is lots of confusion going about different issues but at last all efforts of parents going in vein.Its win win situation for schools after all be it framing of criteria or deciding on admission schedule.Government favoritism towards private schools can be clearly seen.
