Govt fixes upper age limit for nursery intake

The Delhi government has finally stepped in to do away with all ambiguity regarding the upper age limit in nursery admissions that start from January 1 next year. In a meeting of the State Advisory Board convened by Education minister Kiran Walia, it was decided that the upper age limit
of a child for admission in nursery would be 3 years 11 months and 30 days.
In the guidelines that were released on December 13, only the minimum age limit, i.e. 3+ years was mentioned.
"There was a lot of ambiguity in terms of age with some schools not admitting students who were close to four years old. There is now a clear guideline on age," said Amit Singla, director, Education.
Another important decision that will affect the admission procedure is the suggestion that neighbourhood be given the maximum points in the points system for admission.
"It was decided in the meeting that schools will give the maximum points for neighbourhood in keeping with the Supreme Court's order that children in the neighbourhood be given the first priority," said MS Rawat, member of the Advisory Board and general secretary of the Federation of Private Schools, Delhi.
The meeting also opened the doors for schools to start second shifts provided they are not run for commercial purposes. Schools have been demanding second shifts in the city for a long time now to meet the demand for admissions.
"The minister has agreed to let schools open second shifts provided we follow the RTE there as well and that the morning staff and principal be different from the evening staff and principal. This step will go a long way in improving the educational prospects of students," said Rawat.
A committee will be formulated to look into the matter opening of second shifts in
private schools, a statement issued by the Delhi Government said.
"That the upper age limit has been fixed is a matter of relief for many parents as a number of schools were not giving admission to kids who were older than three and a half years. This is victory for many such parents. The limit, however, seems a little stringent, especially for those who did not get admission last year and are now 4 years old. Getting admission in KG is very difficult," said Sumit Vohra, founder admissionsnursery.com, a portal for parents.

hi sumit,
my ques is what will happen to childs who are born in march end, as neither they are complete three this year and next year they will cross upper limit because of 3 years 11 months 30 days.
my ques also wants to clarify 3 years age is minimum limit but at what date is it 1 jan ( forms date ) or 1 april ( school joining date)?

Money, it says MIN 3 YRS AND MAX 4 YRS ON 31 MAR 2013 ( FOR THIS YEAR) AND EVERY ACADEMIC YEAR ITS ON 31 MAR.

As on 31st MARCH 2013 my daughter will be 3years 11months 10days old, will she be able to get admission? also if you can suggest the list of schools near Chittranjan Park, who would follow the upper age limit guideline for admission ?

Shweta Yes new guideline are Min 3 yrs and mac 4 yrs on 31 mar 2013 so she is eligible.
Schools are DPS Eok/ Bluebells /Frank Anthony /K R Mangalam/Mothers INT/BVN/APJ

Sakshi ji (asked the same question to lathaa ji) this sounds like too much of a thing considering that admissions have been so difficult and now to give a request to the DIRECTOR.I mean i am pretty skeptical as to how much of it would be heard in our country..i didnt get admission last year and this year my son would be 4 years and just about 9 days on 31st march 2013 and considering the fresh guidelines, he would only be eligible for admission in kg which anyway is 100 times tougher than nursery..shouldn't they have left margin for at least 1 or 2 months considering that, there is very little difference between a child who is 3 years 11 months and a child who is 4 years and 1 month old..my personal view is that they should have these guidelines implemented from next year, so that the parents who are applying admissions for the second time are not biased against..they should clearly state that these are applicable from next year..by the way these guidelines are not to be seen on doe website..do they take time to update this or a formal order is yet to be passed?

The cut off date as per the guidelines is 30th March , so the last date for a child to be eligible for Nursery admission this year would be 30th March 2009 . Please confirm if my reading is correct or not
