No change in points system for nursery admissions

The points system for nursery admission in schools is expected to remain the same this year as well. With the directorate of education saying there won’t be many changes in the guidelines for nursery admission other than the time frame, schools are looking at implementing a points system similar to the last year.

Weightage to distance, alumni and sibling are expected to dominate the points table this year as well. “We have been taking into account the directions of the HC and the directorate of education when it comes to the points system and have not gone wrong so far. This years’ points system will be more or less the same,” said Ameeta Wattal, principal, Springdales, Pusa Road.

The school has given points for sibling (30), alumni parents (25), distance (20), minority criteria (5), girl child (5) and transfer cases (5) last year. Most other schools had similar points systems.

“There is no better mechanism to conduct the admissions fairly and we will be sticking to the points system,” said RC Jain, Delhi State Public Schools Management Association.

But for parents who have not studied in Delhi this is bad news.

“Giving so many points for alumni is a death blow to us. Both my wife and I are from towns in Uttar Pradesh and are, therefore, disqualified from taking admission in most top schools,” said Abhinav Rana, a legal consultant in a private firm.

“Alumni mean individuals who have studied in the school, usually till class 10 or 12. The RTE says no points can be given on basis of education of parents,” said Sumit Vohra, founder, admissionsnursery.com.

I would like to propose following admission system for Delhi schools:

80% of the non-EWS seats to be filled as per the following criteria:

Distance up to 1 km: 100 points

Distance up to 3 km: 80 points

Distance up to 5 km: 60 points

20% of the non-EWS seats to be filled by the 'alumni', 'sibling', 'single parent', 'physically handicapped' and 'transfer' cases. A separate draw of lots will be conducted for these 20% of the seats. Only those kids will be eligible for this draw who failed to get selected on the distance criteria.

@ Akshat

According to RTE Act, 25% of the seats go to EWS. Rest only 75% general and admission based on only distance criteria will never work or be acceptable by majority parents.

Pls read my comment carefully. I said non-EWS seats.

@ Akshat

Read carefully you have mentioned

80% of the non-EWS seats to be filled as per the following criteria:

So I tried to correct that it is only 75% non-EWS seats.

No, what I am saying is if there are 100 seats 25 go to EWS, 80% of the remaining (that is 80% of 75 seats) go to distance and 20% of the remaining (that is 20% of 75 seats) go to the second category

Interesting debate we have going on here. Not sure if we would ever have a one size fits all kind of a situation . 'The area only criteria' seems to be a wonderful criteria devoid of any biases but is still subject to abuse. From  a long term perspective, having only a distance criteria will give a fillip to an inclusive education culture as parents will be forced to send their wards to government schools which may lead to a rise in standards but then what happens till then. The ques. left to be unanswered are for localities like North delhi or Sarita vihar which may not have enough of public schools.

My vote however still goes for having only distance as a criteria and I can confirm that I have more than one child so no bias here.At times I do feel that having points for alumni ( or sibling) may just be unfair and contrary to the cosmopolitan character Delhi is fast embodying.

Kindly inform me if a branch of one school is recently being established then what is the criteria for points in absence of alumnisssssss????

simply they will not give any point for alumni..... like heritage school, Vasant Kunj is newly established school (has not completed 12 years), they do not give any points to alumni.

Yes Arti is right.

In that case what will be the point system???

@Shivenrda, More or like last year and school specific but neibourhood might get more points

Even if school gives 99 points to distance and 0.5 to alumni and 0.5 to sibling, then also admission is not guaranteed. As no school gives admission only on the basis of distance. If DOE issue a guideline that admission must be granted to kids living within 2-3 kms from the school, will be granted admission, then only you can expect the admission of your child.  SO  SUMIT VOHRA JI RIGHTLY SAID, ALUMNI POINTS should totally be eliminated
