No change in points system for nursery admissions

The points system for nursery admission in schools is expected to remain the same this year as well. With the directorate of education saying there won’t be many changes in the guidelines for nursery admission other than the time frame, schools are looking at implementing a points system similar to the last year.

Weightage to distance, alumni and sibling are expected to dominate the points table this year as well. “We have been taking into account the directions of the HC and the directorate of education when it comes to the points system and have not gone wrong so far. This years’ points system will be more or less the same,” said Ameeta Wattal, principal, Springdales, Pusa Road.

The school has given points for sibling (30), alumni parents (25), distance (20), minority criteria (5), girl child (5) and transfer cases (5) last year. Most other schools had similar points systems.

“There is no better mechanism to conduct the admissions fairly and we will be sticking to the points system,” said RC Jain, Delhi State Public Schools Management Association.

But for parents who have not studied in Delhi this is bad news.

“Giving so many points for alumni is a death blow to us. Both my wife and I are from towns in Uttar Pradesh and are, therefore, disqualified from taking admission in most top schools,” said Abhinav Rana, a legal consultant in a private firm.

“Alumni mean individuals who have studied in the school, usually till class 10 or 12. The RTE says no points can be given on basis of education of parents,” said Sumit Vohra, founder, admissionsnursery.com.

Dear Akshat

Your point is quite valid for the parents who stay near Noida..Gurgaon as the school are far better in many aspects !!

I like Maharam point table but I think we should have seat reservation on allumni and siblings. Like if the system works in terms such away for 100 seats :

25 for EWS (Again EWS should have Distance category)

35 Seats for Alumni, Siblings and transfer case (Again this will work on Distance category among the pool of Alumni and Siblings).

Rest 55 seats should be open on Distance Category and Girls.

I know its a reservation format but by such way nearer will get seat definitely and alumni and siblings are restrict to a quota.

Many of people who are residing 20 KM from school get their child admission on base on alumni, so this system will make precaution of such admission.

Also this can be change when it is a matter of religion or region centric school like missionaries as they are bound with their social functionality. In those school they can have 18 seats of EWS without Social Point (again that also have lookout distance), 7 Seats for EWS with Social Points, 20 Seats for social points, 20 seats for Siblings and Alumni (and those  Siblings and Alumni who have social point are allowed to chose any one of category),  and rest for distance basis.

this is my calculation but school can have modification in nos. But i feel the system of selection should be like that s that nearer will get full advantage.

The popular perception is that parents are the victims in the Delhi admission process. But I think parents are also the problem. Some parents want transfer category to remain because it suits them, others want sibling to remain because it suits them, while some want alumni because it suits them. Had we thought logically keeping the bigger picture in mind only the area category would have qualified.

@Akshat ,You are also talking what suits you, i can bet you have only one kid, because all the parents having  two kids want sibling as even school lobby accepts this  . yes rest i agree everyone wants what suits them but  do you think Schools will agree to only distance criteria and the localities like sarita vihar , sainik farms (many more) which don't have school nearby . where all the kids will go ?

Yes, I have only one kid but I am willing to sacrifice 'first child' point because I think it is illogical just as sibling, transfer and alumni are illogical. The logic given for sibling category is that "it becomes difficult to handle two kids going to different schools". My counterview is that this way kids become more independent and responsible. I bet you can see the difference in such cases. Also, if only area category is applied, both the kids are likely to go to same school or schools in the same area.

No , but after neighbourhood, you only mentioned draw of lots as no of applicants are greater than number of seats earlier in other thread .so whats the confirmation both the kids will get thru lottery into same school.

More important point is very few schools in north delhi and other areas as i mentioned above, where those parents should apply ?

We are talking here of long-term solutions. The long-term solution is to have area category only. Once only area category is left, the so-called prestigious schools will lose the tag. In all our discussions we forget the govt schools. People will be surprised to know that many govt schools in delhi have better infrastructure and better faculty than private schools. The only thing they lack is the 'prestigious' tag or the administrative attention that comes with this tag.

@ Akshat

Please name those govt. schools with better infrastructure and faculty which  may be helpful to fellow parents.

Also, to answer the second part, all areas have govt schools, whether north delhi or narela. I am ready to send my kid to govt school, provided only the area criteria is followed by all schools in my area.

@Akshat, now why do you become so conditional? Be exemplary to send your ward to a govt. school for this upcoming session. This will encourage other parents also and I agree craze for so called branded schools will come down with such steps by more parents who vote for your area criteria. So why do you not become the 1st person to set this example.

i agree with you. Even govt. wants that middle class society take admission in Gvt. School so that they can get future aids. But if you think practically no parent of middle class society want his child to be in Govt. school. As he is aware of the environment, facilities, teacher's attitude toward child, abusive and violent culture among groups and so on what he has seen in his time. I have visited some govt. schools last year and find they are still following the same trend. So why should I take risk for my child future.

I have mark up this issue last year too but moderator may have ignored that. Until the govt. does not take initiative to change the environment of school similar to a private school, only the needy parent refer Govt. School.

I also visit KV Vigyan Vihar, Andreus ganj and some other and found that they are following the standards, a good environment and full facilities with mannered teachers. it is also operate by Govt. KV do not take business class students, if they take I prefer my child to be there. KV is for govt. staff only (like IAS, IPS, Army, Officials, Police) and so they are on same level of private school. There is a slogan in Hindi "Andha Bate revari, apno apno ko de". Thats Govt. is doing. If Govt. schools comes to the level of KV I will be the first one to join my child to Govt. School.

Pls refer to my previous comments on this issue. Also, I would like all to carefully check this link: http://in.linkedin.com/pub/maharam-tanwar/17/a60/b73.
