From making their children take leave from school on certain days to exchanging odd numbered cars with relatives and friends on even numbered days, and from hiring CNG cabs to forming carpooling groups, parents are considering various options to cope with the road-rationing policy. Some parents are also planning to hire common cabs and divide the cost.

“I have a son and a daughter. Both go to different schools. So it is going to be a little difficult for us to manage. Usually, I drop and pick the children from school, but my wife is going to do that now since she knows how to drive and women are exempt. But I know many parents who really don’t know what to do. Some have decided to hire CNG cabs to drop children back home,” said Ajay Gulati.

Others like Digvijay are expecting to be majorly inconvenienced till April 30. “My child studies in R K Puram and I stay in Pushp Vihar. The school bus usually drops the children at PVR Saket. So, I am a little stuck right now… We have already formed a parents’ group to look at the how best to deal with it.”

The Delhi government has stuck to its stand on not relaxing the odd-even restriction for fathers. Fathers will be exempted only if a child in school uniform is accompanying them.

But they will be penalised while coming back from school after dropping the children or while going to pick them up during the restriction period. Women are exempted if they travel alone, with women or children up to 12 years old.

“Parents are really exploring options. I met somebody who has two odd numbered cars and is looking to exchange one for an even number. Many are thinking of making their children take leaves. The government should really have given some concession to parents picking up their children from school,” said Sumit Vohra, a parent.

Parents are also worried about the government making the scheme a permanent fixture. Vikas Shokeen, whose child studies in a school at Rohini, said,

“For 15 days this time, one can manage, but doing this for 15 days every month is going to be a huge problem.”

I practically do everything around home and work single handedly. Driving is the one thing I don't myself. I don't see how my car would polute lesser if I drove it myself and more if my driver was on the wheel...
Its a nuisance for me at school hours.
