It’s disadvantage for parents of first-born in queue for nursery Maroosha

For the past few weeks, the Sachar family in Vasant Kunj has been spending time trying to search schools in Delhi — for it is time to admit their three-and-half-year-old son Jai to the nursery. And as January 1, the day nursery admissions open in the Capital, nears, the couple is growing increasingly nervous.

“I have short-listed schools but each has its own criteria. I am not an alumni of any of these schools, I don’t have any other child admitted here, I am neither a transfer case nor a single parent. The only plus is that all these schools are in my neighbourhood (South Delhi),” says Punit Sachar, an IT professional.

Similar worries hound other parents who are looking for admission for their first-born child. With most points allotted to criteria like neighbourhood, sibling, alumni, girl child, etc, such couples have limited choices.

“Even if some schools give points to the first-borns, they will be fewer as compared to other categories. I wonder what will happen to me, or the parents like me,” says Dhiraj Mehendiratta from Pitampura, Northwest Delhi.

With the government giving the private recognised unaided schools freedom to choose their own criteria, a majority of the schools in the Capital — under the Action Committee of the Private Recognised Unaided Schools — have said they will follow the previous year’s points system formulated by the Ganguly Committee.

Under this system, applicants are allotted points on the basis of distance from the school, sibling in the school, and if their parents are alumni; a girl child gets points, and even religious and linguistic minorities are given points.

Geetika, an HR professional, who is seeking a seat for her son in a “good school”, says: “Pranit is my first child. I don’t qualify for any of the big categories like sibling or alumni. I don’t even get the points for girl child.”

Vice-chairperson of the National Progressive Schools’ Conference and the principal of Bal Bharati Public School, Gangaram Hospital Marg, L V Sehgal told Newsline, “It is going to be difficult for couples to secure admission for their first born child this year. Schools are already operating at their maximum capacity, so there is no chance of increasing the number of seats. First, there is the EWS quota, then the discretionary quota (earlier called the management quota) and then the remaining go to other categories. Chances for such parents are narrowing.”

There are a few schools that have kept a separate quota for the “first-born”. Principal of Laxman Public School-Hauz Khas, Usha Ram says: “We have a category for first born applicants. They should also get a chance

Sakshi Mam..I am also very worried...Mine is first child and that too boy. After looking at the point system of Bal Bharti PITAM PURA I m getting just 34 point..Is there any chance for parents like me? Please help...

Same worries even I have, I am getting only 28 points as per the point system. They kept 50 points for their school only, 20 for Sibling, 20 for Alumni & 10 for Children of Bal Bharti School / Care Centres. That means they are not giving chance to outsiders for admission at all

Also, why they are deducting the General quota for staff wards

hi

myself preeti how u calculate your points in bal bharti public school plz tell me if know how much points each category got as i am also a parent of afirst child plzzzzz help me out

I agree with Mr Sachar, First Born and a boy have  hardly any chance to qualify , We are always in  support of neibhourhood  foremost important point in selection procedure  for all the schools situated within the residential colonies like  DPS VASANT KUNJ DPS R.K Puram, Vasant Valley, Modern School, Tagore Intl, Heritage, Goenka.
facing same prob....first boy child.......did i commit any crime......?? :-(
even I have first boy child. It seems that we have commited some crime. Why the govt can't understand our situation? Where we will go? Any answer on this from govt ----------------------------

Hi balvinder

how many points u r getting as per point system of BBPS Pitampura?

http://balbharatipp.org/About%20Us/Adminission.htm - this link gives only Alumni, neighbourhood, girl child, first child and EWS considerations for allocating points. Also, the actual points allocated are not mentioned. Where does it say anything about children of Bal Bharti care centres?

hi jyotika-

i got 40 points only :-( thy r gvng 5 marks extra for girl child means if a parent had first girl child they got 15 marks....this is injustice......

Mr. Anand....whn u click the above link u got an icon (red color) criteria for 2011-2012 their point system is mentional.....and they r gvng 10 points extra for  their students (play school for BBPS) whn i went to bal bharti play school for general inquiry abt an yr ago they said we dont gve preference to our children we dnt give direct admission to the school.....nd no extra points for that.....at that time i dnt like their play school so i refused thm for play school and got my son's admission in mother's pride....nd nw they r gvng extra points for their play school students......is really shockng for me.....means the school is committed to its words....

even I am mother of boy child ( first child)...................I am also worried.......
Thanks jyotika, I can see the link now. But the neighbourhood is still a little doubtful - the areas are not clearly mentioned. Which areas fall under their 3 Kms or 5 Kms neighbourhood? Also, can one apply to both BBPS Rohini and BBPS Pitampura? Can't seem to find any link for BBPS Rohini yet
