Writ Petition Filed Against Humayun Rd School

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

New Delhi: Even as schools are struggling at the hands of the government, parents are upset with the schools for not playing fair. The rebellion started with a parent reportedly filing a writ petition in the Delhi High Court against R S Junior Modern School at Humayun Road on Tuesday for allegedly not disclosing points scored by parents.
Rakesh Mittal, an advocate, said, ‘‘The school has released a list of 166 candidates without any points. Despite the directorate of education issuing a notice to the school, it has not made its admission criteria public. So we filed a writ petition against the school this morning.’’ He added, ‘‘The hearing was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon but it is now scheduled to happen on Wednesday morning in court number 14.’’
Parents, whose children could not get through any school, mostly blame the existing point system for their disappointment. Said Atif Khursheed, a businessman from Zakir Nagar in south Delhi, who had applied in at least 12 schools, ‘‘It’s so frustrating to realise my child could not get admission anywhere. Some schools did not give me points even when I stayed within a radius of 3km. Others only preferred siblings and alumni parameters. I feel so stressed.’’
Sumit Vohra, founder of an online forum for harried parents — www.admissionsnursery.com, added, ‘‘There are so many parents on our forum who had applied in several schools but could not get through anywhere. Adding to their woes was the sudden removal of the parameters of profession and education.’’ But all is not lost. Principals suggest parents should grab a seat in any school they can make it to. Witing for the second list is a good option as many withdrawals are likely to take place.
Said L V Sehgal, principal, Bal Bharati Schjool, GRH Marg, ‘‘As most schools have come out with their lists on the same day, many candidates seem to be common. As a result, there will be a lot of withdrawals.”
In fact, there is a word of assurance from the government too. According to education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, all children will find admission if the parent do not run after a particular set of schools. ‘‘We will make sure all children get a nursery seat. Though the admissions will wrap up by March 31 but the seats falling vacant due to transfers or otherwise can be filled up by July 31,’’ Lovely said.
