Delhiites are mostly anxious about the nursery admissions of their children despite the changes in the guidelines made by lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung. The admission process will begin on January 15.
The lieutenant-governor last week made two important changes in the guidelines for nursery admissions — management quota was abolished and it was decided to allot 70 points to children under the neighbourhood criteria, covering a radius of 6 km from the school.
According to a survey conducted by admissionsnursery.com, 63 per cent of some 1,700 parents were anxious about their children’s admissions. They felt that their children had no chance of getting admission even if they got extra points under sibling parameters.
Some 40.8 per cent of the parents viewed the new admission guidelines positively. However, 28 per cent of the participants said the neighbourhood criteria should have been 10 km, and not 6 km, to get 70 points.
Delhi parents want the neighbourhood criteria to increase the distance between school and residence of potential students to be 10 km instead of six km. They also want extra points for safe transport for students with siblings. Safe transport is an undertaking given by the parents to that school that they will take responsibility of dropping and picking up their children.
“Maximum parents were happy with the new point points system, but surprisingly more than 25 per cent of the parents in the survey felt that 10 km should have been the radius instead of 6 km for the neighbourhood criteria. So that most of them would be able to apply in maximum number of schools around them,” the founder of the admissionsnursery.com, Sumit Vohra, said.
Some 28 per cent parents are displeased the manner in which maximum weightage was given to the neighbourhood criteria with a fixed radius of 6 km.
As per the survey, 13.4 per cent of the participants said that the distance criteria should have been staggered — like 70 points to children residing within 0-3 km radius and 50 points to those falling between 3-6 km. This time, equal points would be awarded to all the children seeking admission within the 6 km radius.
Some 40.8 per cent parents replied in affirmative when asked whether they were happy with new admission points system for year 2014-15. “Yes, I have some chances of getting admissions in good schools,” but, 10 per cent said, “No, as I don’t have any neighbourhood points.”
Mr Vohra added that every year reputed schools in Delhi get around four lakh applications for one lakh seats. However, this year with the 6 km as fixed radius for 70 points, there are chances of less applications.
