Schools violating RTE norms, screening kids for nursery: Parents

GURGAON:
GURGAON:

Education activists and parents complained of several city schools, especially private ones, violating the Right to Education (RTE) norms while giving admissions to children in the nursery class.

Even this year, several schools continue to interact with parents and children prior to the admission even though the RTE norms prohibit any kind of screening.

The schools argue that nursery section does not come under the purview of RTE. However, Khagesh B Jha, a Supreme Court lawyer, who had filed a case in the Delhi high court earlier contesting the screening of children for nursery admissions, disagrees.

“Screening prior to admission is an issue of concern across the country and not just in Gurgaon. According to the RTE norms, no student can be differentiated under any circumstances. The process of admission should be transparent and should not include any tests for students or parents, especially at the nursery level,” he said.

According to parents, Gurg aon schools conduct these screening interviews in the name of “infor mal interactions”.

“One of the schools has called us for an interaction next week. When we enquired about the reason, they said it is to show us around the school and have an informal chat with parents before the admission is finalised. We cannot back out as it is a well-reputed school,” said Shweta Sahoo, a parent in Gurgaon.

Parents confirmed that at least 10 schools in the city have called them such sessions.

Conforming that screening is being done, a spokesperson of Manav Rachna International School said, “Parents are called within a day or two after they register with us. After the screening, parents are informed about the results,” the spokesperson said.

According to education activists, such screening procedures are unfair and subjective.

“Even after a lot of complaints, some schools find a way to check the background of parents. Some schools confirm if parents can fulfil any future financial demands. They openly ask about their income and occupation. Some schools ask parents to fill long questionnaires,” Sumit Vohra, founder of admissionsnursery.com, said.

Almost every school in Noida does that. Apeejay asks questions and salary of parents., and then asks for "donation" in the name of "orientation fees" towards its university. Amity asks for educational qualifications of paternal and maternal grand parents along with educational qualifications of parents.

Hima

In Delhi neither parents nor school can call parents.

What can we as parents do to change this? Schools are businesses, not charity orgs. School admin and owners care only about money.

Delhi Govt has made strict rules, so schools don't have any option to bypass them. But, Noida is UP and Gurgaon is Harayana, opposites of "strict", "rules", and "order".

If parents protest , AAP came one year back but parents are protesting in Delhi from long time.

Yaa...there is not any interview process in delhi....even Cost of forms is very low every kind of parents can afford to admit their Child for education....But Here ..Parents of Avrage income even cant think about it....what they will do??I have seen many parent who dont know to converse in engilsh and they are not even properly being attand by the school...Its really Wrost.!

Amity school has taken an exam of 30 minutes and asked various unwanted question like grandparents education, when they completed ,profession office address and many other thing and similar for maternal grandparents side.
Along with many other question like child activity and psychological question.
And after shortlisting this stage then parents to be ask for next round interview.
These types of thing created a lot of time wastage of parents and frustration . do pls avoid these things.

Sure we will highlight again

True, this is with every amity branch and after wasting so much time, there is no confirmation of admission,

I personally feel even kids should not be called for an interaction. What do they expect from barely 3-year-olds? No one is a born genius and there are slow learners too.

It depends on the school what kind of individuals kids become in future. I'm a living example for this. As a child, I used to be extremely introvert. I just couldn't speak in front of anyone. I would rather faint of dehydration, but not ask for teacher's permission to have water. But my school played a key role in making me who I am today. I eventually turned out to be an ace debater, with good stage presence.

But these days schools expect kids to be familiar with letters, numbers, shapes, colours, and what not. To an extent, an informal interaction with parents is still okay, but at least tiny tots should be spared of the trouble.

Yes Neha

Kidsare supposed to enter school only after confirm admissions as per rte but UP n Harayana govt are not taking any action.we have been highlighting from long time

To add to what Neha has just highlighted, I feel that kids are being interviewed for what they would be 6-7 months later. e.g a child who is barely 2.5 years now is facing questions that are valid for 3 years plus kids.

Also, if someone's parents could not be very proficient in english based on their education/ situations in the past those kids don't deserve a good school for shaping up his/her career?

I don't understand where are we heading towards, and then we say that we should emphasize on making our education system very strong.

More than acting as a catalyst in foundation years of kids, these days school act as yet another money making business model.

Yes Definatly....Some times it happens that child is not in the mood to speak anything even if he knows everything...we cant force the child.
