Schools violating RTE norms, screening kids for nursery: Parents

GURGAON:
GURGAON:

Education activists and parents complained of several city schools, especially private ones, violating the Right to Education (RTE) norms while giving admissions to children in the nursery class.

Even this year, several schools continue to interact with parents and children prior to the admission even though the RTE norms prohibit any kind of screening.

The schools argue that nursery section does not come under the purview of RTE. However, Khagesh B Jha, a Supreme Court lawyer, who had filed a case in the Delhi high court earlier contesting the screening of children for nursery admissions, disagrees.

“Screening prior to admission is an issue of concern across the country and not just in Gurgaon. According to the RTE norms, no student can be differentiated under any circumstances. The process of admission should be transparent and should not include any tests for students or parents, especially at the nursery level,” he said.

According to parents, Gurg aon schools conduct these screening interviews in the name of “infor mal interactions”.

“One of the schools has called us for an interaction next week. When we enquired about the reason, they said it is to show us around the school and have an informal chat with parents before the admission is finalised. We cannot back out as it is a well-reputed school,” said Shweta Sahoo, a parent in Gurgaon.

Parents confirmed that at least 10 schools in the city have called them such sessions.

Conforming that screening is being done, a spokesperson of Manav Rachna International School said, “Parents are called within a day or two after they register with us. After the screening, parents are informed about the results,” the spokesperson said.

According to education activists, such screening procedures are unfair and subjective.

“Even after a lot of complaints, some schools find a way to check the background of parents. Some schools confirm if parents can fulfil any future financial demands. They openly ask about their income and occupation. Some schools ask parents to fill long questionnaires,” Sumit Vohra, founder of admissionsnursery.com, said.

Really.....! very fedup by this Procedure...!One side they demand that child should not be in Daycare thay prefer the child who stays with their parents and grand parents and the other side thay prefer the child which parents earns enough money....Even we dont understand the criteria for shortlisting forms and after that the criteria of shortlisting the child.

when child is repliying each and every question asked by you then why you did not admit him???

i dont understand that why they schools are so worried about parents income...Afterall we are the responsible to submit the fees na...and After that everything is in school hand if we proves the fee defaulter..then they are authorized to take any action still they are selecting the child as per their parents Income.

So what is the problem if Both are working and child stays in daycare ,to fullfil the demands by the school that been necessary to be working both the parents. But they have problem by this too....!

This truly is so frustrating. There is not a single school that talks about what they would do to interact with children, to help them understand and relate things via examples. They only talk about 10th and 12th results to show up which is hardly of any use at this stage. Even the teachers and staff who are present during interaction talk so rudely to most of the parents, not sure how would they behave with such little kids if they do not have patience to talk to grown ups as well.

Rather than creating a friendly interaction session with the kids, I had actually got pissed off by the way they interact with kids.

My daughter doesn't open up so easily, doesn't mean she is unaware of basic things. She had to attend back-back interaction sessions in 3 schools in a day. All asking same questions..

This is really so disappointing, Shilpa. In one of the so-called "prestigious" schools, they had created a play area for the kids with so many toys and slides around. And, then they expected them to quietly sit next to the teacher and obediently answer all the questions. My daughter ran to the slides, and they said she had a problem with her attention span.

its so cruel......!
