The minimum age for admission into nursery classes in the city should be increased to four years from current three, according to a consensus evolved at a meeting of school principals and parents, chaired by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on Monday (February 15). The minimum age for admission into class one should be six years, he said announcing the consensus that emerged at the meeting.

Sibal said he will write to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to consider implementation of the decisions. Pre-schools like nursery and KG should be delinked from formal schooling system, it was agreed, Sibal said. Non-formal schooling should have separate infrastructure which will help in de-stressing children, it was agreed.

New Delhi, Feb 15 (PTI) In a step aimed at reducing pressure on thousands of children and their parents, the minimum age for admission for nursery in the Delhi schools may be raised from three to four years.

Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal today held a meeting with principals and parents where a consensus was evolved that the minimum age for nursery admission should be four years, while it should be six years for Class-I.

The minister will write to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to consider its implementation.

According to Sibal, "The consensus was that the minimum age for nursery admission should not be three years.

It should be four years. Admission into nursery system at three years adds emotional stress to the child when he should discover the world.

nurserymom ,

Lots of economics !!!
i am shocked with the analysis done by you.....u seem to be worried more for india`s economical growth rather than ur own child`s growth..
our kids are innocent buds and should be allowed to bloom at their own sweet pace...
Are you aware of the no. of cases where 10 and12 yr.olds are committing suicide for not being able to bear the performance pressure.
Its high time to think differently .

Child entering Nursery at 4+ will complete XII by 18; Graduation by 21 and MBA by 23........

justified...

We're mocking west does that fit in the Indian context. We're a different identity; our problems are different.

And BTW the West today is facing the highest medical cost crisis - one of the reasons is a high number of retiring baby boomers and their tax payers starting careers pretty late...

We're are going to land up there in a few decades if we don't plan now - and America will sustain because they have the monetary muscle power, with our appeasing foreign policies we will need some thinking and long term strategy to sustain... add the neighborhood threat constantly hovering on us from all sides... we can't think like america...
Agreeing at large with all it should be 4yrs but what next those who have got it and also if they make 6yrs as 1st in that start taking entrance as many do. do you think it will put less pressure on kids or parents. Now what about those who have got admission we all are back to square one 3 yrs back (if not mistaken ) we all were debating on this
My opinion is that this change should be implemented from next year.
We already have faced so much this year for getting our child admitted. For this year , schools should be instructed not to put pressure on child and make child enjoy and learn at school.

And also what will kid do at home as most of us are working, who will take care of them. They will sit at home and watch TV.

How will we take so many leaves from office again. I agree kids are under lots of pressure today but increasing age from 3 to 4 is not the solution. We should reduce our expectation from child and let him enjoy and live their own life.
I agree with this.My son was 3+ last year ,but I did not get him admitted to any school as I think that it is not the right age for formal school and I didi not want to pressurize my child. This year he is 4+ and I did not know that school would refuse admission on age basis.I am ready to give a letter to give a letter that pulling him back is my decision. But a few schools refused and few accepted it.
There should be a uniformity and the age should be raised to 4+.In US schooling starts at 5+,in Germany and France schooling is mandatory at age of 6+.
Why should our children be pressurized from a tender age of 3?
Hey Guys but what abt our kids who are already 3 and we are trying for their admissions this year and still in pipeline. What shld we do. Secure admission or sit on it ???
This is first thing I read this morning and was a happy to hear the decision. I do agree 3 + is far to young for a child to go to nursery....its not just about nursery there are so many pressures involved. My son will be starting school in April, and his school timing is at 8am, which means the school bus will pick him up at 6:45am, god only knows why this ridiculous timing...have to find another way, and then by the time the child returns back its almost 2pm, because the bus has to wait for the rest of the KG kids to finish session. I've always been against this young age, I kept saying this at the board, I don't remember going to school before the age of 5years, which is an appropriate age for nursery. However with the Delhi schools and the pressures on parents we have no choice but oblige.

Please clarify to me the age criteria has already been passed for next year, or are they still just talking about it ? If already passed, then maybe children who will be going this year can probably postpone going to nursery next year. Even though there will be some money loses but so what......
I remember few years back they reduced age from 4 to 3. What were the logic then??? Now again 3 to 4. I’m sure logic for these moves would be completely opposite. However, 3 to 4 seems to be more logical and good for the kids.
i totally agree this changes should be implemented from next year .we hv already through with the admission we hv already taken the admission.so what we do
HI All,

There is no need to panic ..if this new age rule is enforced ..it wud be from next year only(as per newspapers) !!

Yesterday i watched the press conference of our HRD minister Mr. kapil Sibal on news channels. First of all it is just a proposal he made to Sheila Dixit. Nothing finalise as yet. If any changes happen then it will be from next academic session. So nothing to panic for the parents whose children get thru this years nursery admission.

And about the proposal in my opinion it is really very very good. A 3 year old child is too small to go to formal school. In a play school he/she is much more secured and pampered. The student teacher ratio is very small like 8:1 but in a formal school it will be like 15:1. So you can't expect so much care and pampering for a child which really a 3 year old need. May be there will be not much of education but a child have to get up early, get ready for the school, go to the school all by himself in a school bus or school van. A 4+ child will be more mature to join a formal schooling as he will be able to communicate properly, can to some extent take care of himself, potty trained, can eat small meals properly. So i think the 4+ or 5+ is the best time for formal schooling
Last year I could not apply for my 3 years old daughter because of the fuss created by the Govt. This year many schools have even denied of giving the forms for my daughter since she is 4 years old. And we are nowhere and my daughter could not gate admission any where
THIS IS THE SHAME ON GOVERNMENT POLICY.

Why the politicians are playing with the careers of the kids.
let the parents decide the age of their kids for admission.
If the Govt is so concerned with the education system then let it announce the free education policy upto at least primary standard i.e V standard. and open the Govt schools for pre-primary education.
Personally I feel as far as academics is concerend even four year olds will have a lot of pressure.... but pushing the age up will help benefit all since parents will not have to worry about basic care for their kids at school, teachers will have to spend less time handling cranky toddlers and the children will have fewer traumatic moments of getting wet in school and not being able to communicate simple demands and problems.
My grudge is why us??? The only thing I wanted for my Jan born is more time before she goes to school... for my own peace of mind at least.... unfortunately our kids and the two batches before will end up being the same age as their juniors and always grappling with study pressures esp since with this new change, in the long run curriculum will also be designed in accordance with 6+ in First rather than 5+ in First.
