Nursery entry spells headache for parents

Jasleen Kaur is a concerned parent. She has a three-year-old daughter Paranika who will seek admission in school from next academic year. Paranika was born in May and is eligible for nursery admission as of now. But if the court raised the age criterion to four years, she will have to wait a year more. The court decision will come on January 6, and tens of thousands of parents like Jasleen Kaur are anxiously waiting for the pronouncement.

Paranika has been going to a private 'play school', near her home in east Delhi, for last one and a half years.

“I will fill forms for all schools in the locality but I am not sure what will court say. If it says the entry point should be 4+ then my daughter will have to go to play school for one more year,” says Kaur.

She thinks it is perfectly alright for a child to be in school at this age. “My daughter has learnt a lot in the playschool and it is the right age for her to go to a formal school. If the court says that the entry point should be 4 years, her whole year will be wasted,” she adds. The child will also end up spending one more year in a private play school which is practlically unregulated.

The Directorate of Education (DoE) recently passed an order allowing unaided private schools in the city to go ahead with the admission of 3+ children in pre-school (nursery) class. The admission process is scheduled to start from January 2.

Social Jurist, an NGO, filed a plea against the government’s order and said that pre-school classes should not be allowed and formal education should start with the pre-primary (KG) class where 4+ children should be admitted.

The Delhi high court on Wednesday refused to stay the nursery admission process. The court will decide on January 6 whether pre-school admission should be regarded as entry level. As of now, any child completing three years of age by March 31, 2012 will be eligible for admission to nursery.
The court however has asked the Delhi government to file its reply within three weeks.

Sumit Vohra, who runs admissionsnursery.com - a website when parents share information and tips about the annual ritual of nursery admission, says parents of children seeking admission in 2012 are insecure and not sure whether their child will be promoted to next standard if the court’s verdict goes in favour of the PIL filed by the NGO.

“Parents of those children who are born in April, May and June will suffer the most. If the entry point will be 4+ then these children will be 5+ when they will enter nursery.” He adds that parents are also concerned whether to fill the form or not because many schools sell the form for almost Rs 800. He adds, “Some schools, last year, gave extra points to children who studied in their play school.”

Hi sumit sir
my daughter's dob is 27.05.2008, she goes to play school but all this while i was thinking that it is final that the age is 3+
so still y this confusion. all schools have even given out the guidelines.

My Daughter is April'2008 born. Last year she cannot appear as she didn't complete 3 yrs and
if court come up with 4+ yrs again she has to wait for one year....

its such a hopeless mess...better they took interactions with kids and parents....now its a do what u want to for schools.....while parents.....are soooo tensed..who is getting help nw kids, parents ?

Hi, I think the right age for admission to entry level should be 4+.....bcs how could any parent consider an idea to send a child of 3 years to a formal school.... They are too small to send to formal school. They should be sent to playschool till 4.
Anyway the entry level for rest of india is 4+. Are Delhi children special? or parent want to relieve their duties towards their child as soon as possible.

hello sumit sir, my daughter is 3+ now but i am strongly in confusion that what will we do from 2nd to 6th january, u r suggesting that fill the forms of only those school who have online form fill up option but will it really work? because if we loose 6 days for online forms, then how could we finish up with 15-20 schools in remaining days without online option bcoz there will be long ques for taking the forms and ques will get doubled when to submit the forms, requesting your reply

This is really very confusing. Last yr my son didn't get admission bcos of some days diffrence this yr if verdict come in favour of ngo then he have to attend again play school.i think that 3 yr 6 mths criteria was much better instead of this march criteria

Hi. There is no confusion with respect to Pre-School (Nursery) admission. The Court has refused to stay that process in it's last hearing, which means that all parents seeking Pre-School admission for their children who are 3+ on 31.03.2012 should start the admission process from 2 Jan 2012.

The 6 Jan hearing is to decided the entry level for formal schooling (3+ or 4+). Which means that the courts will decided if Pre-School should be considered as part of the main school or kept out of it. Keeping already accepted Ganguly Committee report in mind, I personally think, the Court will endorse 4+ as formal school age, i.e. Pre-School will be kept out of main school. Formal schooling will start from Pre-Primary (KG) when the child is 4+. Another issue to be decided here would be if Pre-School children will automatically be promoted to Pre-Primary or will they have to seek re-admission. Ganguly Committee Report says that they have to seek readmission.

For Parents seeking admission to Pre-School (Nursery), just go ahead and apply without any tension on this process. Your focus should be on shortlisting your schools where you make best points. Good Luck.
