On why "neighbourhood" should be the only criterion in school admissions

1. Distance from the school is the only criterion that affects a child physically. No other criterion affects the child physically. Criteria like siblings, transferable jobs, awardee parents, single parent and so on are just discriminatory.

2. If more children are sent to neighbourhood schools, all neighbourhood schools would have a chance to develop.

3. Eventually, people would become "proximity" conscious than "brand" conscious.

4. Siblings would stand a greater chance of getting into the same school as they will also qualify for the neighbourhood points like their siblings.

Valid points raised by Moreshwar. In fact, some schools are indeed giving equal points to sibling and first child. You can check the Excel sheet on this website.

@Stuti. Don't type in all caps. I can also shout. I am talking about 10 km radius, not distance by road. If you are in Janakpuri, then 10 km radius includes schools as far back as Chankyapuri or Safdarjung, RK Puram. Vasant Vihar, Dwarka.

If you are in Sarita Vihar, a 10-km radius rule entitles you to apply to schools as far back as AIIMS, parts of RK Puram, practically more than half of south Delhi and Mayur Vihar  I in East Delhi and more.

Imagine applying to all the big schools in Chankyapuri and Safdarjung with an equal opportunity or chance of getting selected as anyone else who is applying.

Shiv has given a very logical reply. This should rest all doubts.

@Shiv

Traveling time is variable, but according to you child physical stress come from traveling time not from Distance travelled.

So even if it is variable you should take it as the criteria , for the welfare of child one should work on it and make variable time as criteria.

Another thing :

In our country there is big disparity. Good Schools are those school catering good class of people. Why DPS Rk puram or Sanskriti school considered best schools in delhi , why not schools in weaker areas like nagloi or shahdara considered to best. Its all about gentry nothing else.

I agree with your Neeraj. There is disparity everywhere.

@Stuti

I am not interested in making any personal comments. Don't dramatize everything. And this is the last time I'll respond to anything written in all caps, unless its written to avoid confusion. Like NO or YES.

Siblings points are unfair. That's it. Check the first list of any school and tell me if it isn't full of registrations with sibling points. Sibling points must go. Two children irrespective of their first born or sibling status, should get an equal opportunity. Your personal comfort and satisfaction of having both your kids sent to the same school doesn't matter as much as the equal opportunity for all kids.

I empathize with parents with siblings. I'd personally hope all siblings get to study together. But if having this criterion takes away the opportunity of first born children or any other children for seeking admissions in schools, then we should do away with this criterion.

And this is the number 1 criterion for why parents of single children are not able to find admissions in the so called 'good' schools.

@Stuti. As I said earlier, the whole concept of 'good' and 'bad' school is there because we don't follow the area system

@Payal you are absolutely right. In the Indian context, only those schools are considered 'good' and perform well in different spheres which attract kids from well-off backgrounds. This is because we Indians have a big character flaw--we work best under pressure. Tell me one school where students from underprivileged sections study and still it is considered 'good'. I can give you another analogy--why is it that we made excellent infrastructure before Independence but fail to give that quality now? This is because at that time a British officer used to stand behind our backs, ready to plant a kick if we failed to deliver. Unfortunately, in independent India, this role has been filled by the influential and opportunist classes.

one factor alone cannot be the decider.

Other parameters besides distance would have to be considered.

Agree with Stuti

I WOULD VOTE ONLY FOR "LOTTERY SYSTEM" WHERE THERE IS NO DISCRIMINATION OF ANY KINDS

@Jaswal, @Manit pls go through the comments right from the beginning to find why your contentions are wrong.

Akshat/ Shiv- Every one has a right to put worth his views. You believe that distance should be the only criteria. But there are many parents in this forum alone who dont agree with you.

We need to build a consensus on the best way forward. You cant impose your views on us or vice versa.
