AFTER the Delhi government introduced the points system for nursery admissions, parents spent many hours drawing lists of schools where their children stood the best chance of getting a seat.

But the state education minister Arvinder Singh Lovelys decision to change the parameters of the points system has put parents as well as school administrations in a spot.

The fact that a majority of the Capitals schools have already come out with lists of the selected candidates is also forcing alarmed parents to push the panic button.

The schools who have not declared their admission list as yet have been left with no option but to make scurried changes as they scramble to accommodate the education ministers latest edict.

The new directive primarily does away with the “ profession and educational which were earlier worth 25- 40 points in most schools.

To adjust this, some schools have increased the points allotted to “ neighbourhood” from 10 to 40.

New parameters such as “ single parent” points have also been set aside for differently- abled candidates and transfer cases.

Harrowed parents, whose children are yet to secure admission, have been left aghast by the sudden change in weightage.

“ We had shortlisted those schools to apply where our child had a good chance of securing admission on the basis of the given criteria. But under the new parameters, we realise that we should have applied to different schools,” Sheena Rai, whose daughter was to start pre- school from this academic session, said.

“ What is the need to change the selection process is almost over? This is sheer harassment for the schools and the parents,” said another disgruntled parent.

The last- minute change has also put schools in a fix. The Model Town- based Srijan Public School has postponed its admission list indefinitely.

On the other hand, the Banyan Tree School, Lodhi Road, displayed the list of the selected candidates two days before the scheduled date of February 1.

Rekha Krishnan, principal, Vasant Valley, said: “ We would not be making any changes in the parameters of the point system because we had never allotted any point to the education of parents or their profession. Our list would come out on February 1 as scheduled.” Despite repeated attempts to contact him, Lovely remained unavailable for comment.

Schools such as Vasant Valley, Springdales, Pusa Road, DPS R. K. Puram, DPS Rohini, Mothers International and Tagore International are expected to come out with their final admission lists in the first week of February.
