Parents prefer lots to points: Survey
With the nursery admission just round the corner, a survey has found that most parents prefer admissions through a draw of lots rather than the 100-point system for nursery school admissions.
Over a 1,100 parents took part in the survey conducted by the popular web portal for parents, AdmissionsNursery.com. The website had hosted a poll on the matter and 72 per cent voted for the lottery system. Many of them believe that the draw of lots was more fair on the child than the points system.
Aarti Jain, a parent, applied in 21 schools last year. Her son was four plus then and did not get through in any of the schools. “If you give 35 points to alumni and 25 to sibling, where do other candidates stand a chance of getting a seat?” she said.
In a survey conducted by the site in 2010, about 65 per cent parents had preferred the points system. But many parents who got their children in through the points system too favoured lots this year.
President of the national Progressive Schools Alliance, LV Sehgal said that even the points system often leads to a draw of lots as there are many scoring the same point. “The points system causes a lot of confusion,” he said
