New Delhi: Schools that had increased their fees beyond the norms set by the government have been asked to roll back the hike. Moreover, schools which hiked the fees without convening the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meeting are being asked to convene a general body PTA meet (where all parents are to be invited) within 30 days, while those that are yet to set up a PTA have been asked to institute their PTA at the general body meet (GBM).
Following the series of protests, complaints and media reports, the directorate of education (DoE) on Wednesday issued a circular to the schools in this regard. Rina Ray, secretary, education, said that DoE has been receiving complaints of schools increasing their fees beyond the limit set by the government. Said Ray: ‘‘Some schools are hiking the fee beyond the permitted limit and without convening their PTA. Some are putting ridiculous clauses such as taking an undertaking from parents that they will not approach the media and DoE or that parents who fail to pay the fees would not be given their children’s report cards. We are issuing a few directions to those schools to be followed with immediate effect.’’ Saying that the schools which have violated the fee hike limit set by the government should roll back the hike, Ray added, ‘‘Moreover, no school should harass the parents by taking any written undertaking or withholding their wards’ results on this issue.’’
On the issue of convening a PTA meeting, the DoE is of the view that schools which haven’t convened the meeting should now convene the GBM that will include all the parents. ‘‘Some schools are subverting the procedure in the name of PTA meeting. Now, they can’t just invite the executive members of the PTA, but will have to include all the parents in the meeting. Meanwhile, those schools which don’t have a PTA are now asked to form their PTA at the GBM,’’ said Ray.
DoE has also asked the director and zonal officers to take suo motu action on complaints received.

Parents protest fee hike:

Over 350 parents gathered at Sachdeva Public School, Pitampura, on Wednesday morning to protest against fee hike. The parents were also demanding setting up of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA). Vijender Gupta, chairman, MCD standing committee, also joined the parents in their protest. The parents said protests would continue till the school management came
