'Point system for admission unfair: Panel

Manash Pratim Gohain | TNN

New Delhi: With nursery admissions just a few months away, Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) observed that the point system was discriminatory and the criteria of ‘neighbourhood’ should only be taken into account. The neighbourhood criteria states that only those students who live within 1-km radius of the school should be admitted.
The commission is examining the point system in the light of the Right of Children of Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 (RTE Act). DCPCR chairperson Amod K Kanth said: ‘‘The point system is a kind of screening tool. It favours those who have already studied in that school. Whether private or government, no school is out of the RTE ambit and this kind of
point system is against the act. Neighbourhood should be the most important criteria. We have already taken up the issue with the government after consultation with stakeholders and will go to court if necessary.’’
Drawing attention to the urgent need for infrastructure development in schools, DCPCR said nearly five lakh children don’t have access to education. The commission has since April 1, 2010 (the day when the RTE Act was
enforced) received over 8,000 complaints of violation of the act, including denial of admission both by government and private schools.
As per the RTE Act, the government should ensure that each child goes to school by the time s/he is three years. ‘‘If the government can organize Commonwealth Games, they can definitely create the infrastructure for educating children,’’ said Kanth.
Stating that corporal punishment is rampant in Delhi schools, DCPCR is now working on a set of guidelines that will enable schools to deal with such emergencies. ‘‘Corporal punishment is rampant and it includes both physical and mental harassment. We are working on a set of guidelines which will be released soon,’’ said Sarita Sarangi, member DCPCR.

The child rights panel observed that the only admission criteria should be whether students live within 1-km radius of the school

Amod kanth is a former cop commissioner who understand the working of indian SYSTEM and is good at giving POLITICALLY correct statement to justify his chair as DCPCR chief.
He may be politically correct but not practically correct.

Does he not know that the amendment to RTE is in the pipeline to give way to screening process which shall limit the ban on screening only for EWS category. ???

INFACT we shud be prepared to take this hit by amendment in the Start or mid of admission process to add to the mess and confusion.

yes !!!! he does know that but his problem is that the small pocket in his shirt has not been stiched properly by the school lobby so his mouth in blabbering all this. Didnt u see that sibal saab is so well suited these days with all his pocket stiched properly :))))))

and BTW no point for guessing it right what i mean.

MAHATMA GANDHI Ji ki jai hoo !!!!!!

BTW if DCPCR was a stakeholder and so interested where was DCPCR when ganguly committee point system was implemented.

Is DCPCR stakeholder ???? since when ??????

where was DCPCD all these 5 years ?

why sudden wake up to realise all this at this moment just before start of process?

waht is the motive behind all these non sensical statement which will create more confusion to already convuluted mysterious process of admissions?

is this not to take media hype and light as amod kanth has a reputation of media publicity hungry !!!!!!!
I hardly understand Politics n don know wheather these people r saying truth or not,but considering my area in mind(West Delhi) even i feel this point system is unjustified as we don have good schools in our neighbourhood.
63 years of independence...but no proper admission system.............
