Schools’ fancy criteria for nursery admissions

It seems schools across the national Capital are exercising complete freedom in devising criteria for nursery admissions. While a few schools, like all branches of Mahavir Secondary School has made it mandatory for the parents of pupils to be strictly vegetarian, others will be asking whether they chew tobacco or drink alcohol.

While Sanskriti School is allotting five points for alumni category, the school being barely 12 years old, one wonders how alumni points are justified when the first batch passed out just a few years ago. These criteria, besides being an invasion of privacy, are also against the RTE, which strictly disallows the profiling of parents. Nursery admission guidelines recently released by the DOE instructed schools to formulate criteria which are ‘just, rational and reasonable’, and according to the philosophy of the schools.

A parent said, “Such freedoms are now being exploited by the schools as they are now taking steps for the profiling of parents.

RC Jain, president of Delhi State Public Schools Management Association, said, “Jain Schools like Mahavir Secondary School and Mahavir Modern School is planning to give points to children of vegetarian parents. Few schools are also planning to give points to parents who are non-smokers, non-alcoholic, etc. But whichever school will finalise on these categories, they will surely publish the same in their prospectuses.” Jain added that the schools are planning to give such preference because they want to promote good habits among parents as well. Rajiv Singh, parent of a three-year old, said, “This is an outright invasion of our privacy. This is a clear contradiction to the RTE Act.”

Meanwhile, Sanskriti School, which was established in 1996 but became functional from 1998, is granting alumni points to its applicants. Abha Sahgal, principal of Sanskriti School, said, “There might be one or two children who will be able to qualify in this category that is why we are giving alumni point.” Sanskriti School is giving points to other categories like neighbourhood, sibling, etc. Founder of admissionsnursery.com, Sumit Vohra said, “The alumni quota that Sanskriti School is keeping point system is not justified at all. This quota does not make any sense.” Another parent said, “This will give a free hand to Sanskriti school to select students on their will in case of a tie between two students.” It must be noted that the first batch of the school passed out in 2002.

n the other hand, Ahlcon International School, Mayur Vihar, which is also of almost the same age as Sanskriti school is not granting alumni points to its applicants. Principal of Ahlcon International Ashok Pandey said, “We are not giving alumni points because our school is just ten years old”. The other points that Ahlcon school is giving are points like neighborhood, sibling, girl child or first child, special child, single parent, transfer cases etc

Last year  for 20 seats in sanskriti there were application in thousands and this year they are doing pick and choose policy

they think everyone will disclose the truth?or school managment is going to live with every parent for a couple of days to see what are the facts about their diet habbits and smoking drinking habbits.

ig points are given for such stupid things, everybody will lie.points shud only be given to things which can be proved like education, first child/sibling,distance from school etc.

sir you have hit the bulls eye
Giving points for being vegetarians!!!!!!! Not that there is anything wrong being a vegetarian. Non-vegetarians are humans too. What are schools turning into? This is ridiculous and highly unethical.
how do school authorities come to know whetehr parents r veg or non veg................Is there any test which can assure  u tht u  rveg or non veg.............this is the biggest senseless point
Ditto! You are absolutely right, Monika!
Ridiculous. Simply ridiculous. How can anyone prove this? Moreover, I would not want my child to study in a school that discriminates between vegetarians and non-vegetarians. That is a personal choice. I would not give extra attention to a vegetarian while teaching him/her.

Aditi, you have a valid point here. How can schools discriminate between children just based on what they consume. Bunch of hypocrites! Next, are they going to decide on what color/type clothes the parents wear?

This is for the schools who are thinking of giving points based on food/alcohol/smoking ...Practice what you preach. I am not in favor of alcoholics or smokers myself, but these criterias should not be one of the main considerations for nursery admissions. Although it would be interesting to learn how the schools plan on proving what the parents say they eat or do.

Can't believe there is so much politics, discrimination, competition, and so much more going on just for getting admission into nursery schools which should be the right (and not privilege) of each and every child born in India. The schools have spare time to discuss on issues like food/alcohol/smoking, but on the other hand, much to my disgust, there are so many children left behind each year who deserve so much more. Have they come up with any plan regarding that. NO??!!!!!!

well said friends..

thanks sumit sir for sharing this info..

for a general category parent it has always been a tough nut to crack to get his/her ward admitted in sanskriti...and this year with alumni filteration, its far more tougher...the school is very good and has come at the same podium place with the biggies like modern & dps in a very little time span.....so many general category parents even after knowing the specific purpose of the school compete here too...i think they can better try a general school to have more probability of getting selected..

regarding veg/non-veg choice, the mahavir schools claim to be having religious minority and they were established with the purpose to cater for them only...but food habits should not debar a good student to seek education in these schools....otherwise all such sectoral schools will have one or more chosen self created criteria to filter their wishlist.
