Last-minute change in criteria creates confusion

New Delhi: Several schools were forced to change their admission criteria at the eleventh hour after a Directorate of Education notice said they were no longer allowed to divide the general category further into sub-categories. Several schools, including branches of Bal Bharati Public School, used to divide their seats into categories and then draw lots to select candidates.
“On December 27, DOE issued a circular saying there cannot be a sub-category under the general one. The system has to be the same for everybody and we can choose the criteria for the points,” said L V Sehgal, principal, Bal Bharati Public School (Gangaram Hospital Marg); the junior school is on Pusa Road.
The Rohini and Pitampura branches of Bal Bharati had already posted their admission plans online. The Pitampura branch, which has 368 seats, had reserved 92 for EWS, 74 for management quota, 18 for alumni, 74 for sibling, 18 for staff and 92 for general category. Distance didn’t make a separate criterion but kids living beyond 7km from the school were automatically ineligible. But that scheme had to be scrapped. The number of EWS and management seats remain the same but there are 202 general category ones. Now, there are 25 points for neighbourhood (0 for distance over 7km), 30 for siblings, 15 for first child, 20 for alumni, 5 for children with special needs and 5 for girl child. “We had to inform the parents of the change,” says Sumit Vohra who is founder of admissions website.

Sub-category withing category not allowed? A good change but BGS International has openly come with another category in application form as follows

* Kindly ensure that the relevant General Category is selected:

Category A – In case sibling is studying in BGSIPS, Dwarka.

Category B – In case parent is a regular staff member of BGSIPS, Dwarka.

Category C – In case applicant doesn’t belong to either of the above cited categories (A & B).

Bal Bharti Dwarka also

It has scrapped the category based system this time and goes through point system. But candidates from

Area D: More than 7 Kms

Janak Puri West, Janak Puri B Block, Janak Puri A Block, Shankar Garden, Mahavir Nagar, Dhauli Piao, Vikas Puri, Krishna Park, Jeewan Park, Sagar Pur,Janak Puri C1, Janak Puri D-Block, Lajwanti Garden, Prem Nagar, Ganesh Nagar, Hari Nagar, Shiv Nagar, Varinder Nagar, Jail Road, Tilak Nagar, Subhash Nagar, Tagore Garden, Rajouri Garden, Mayapuri, Najafgarh

can't apply since it's more than 7 km.

But seats will be dominated by siblings and girl child and a first child near even in 0-3 km will not get admission.

There must be sub category as the old schools with a good strength of students like DPS, Springdales, mother international etc will be the fortresses of sibling and alumni category and a new person from general category will not have any chance of getting the admission in these schools.

So in my perspective it's not a good change!!
First born must be given some points but girl child not, as it becomes girl school with all the sections dominated by girl students.
Moreover the parents living in Dwarka, sending their ward to these public schools, generally belong to educated middle class and in most of the cases don't discriminate in school education between a boy and a girl.

This is definitely not good! All students from General Category will either be Siblings or Alumni. A first born male child with no sibling or Alumni quota has no chance of getting admissions
