HC to hear new plea on nursery guidelines today

New Delhi: Another batch of cases related to the new nursery admission guidelines will be heard in the Delhi high court on Monday. The helpline for complaints on admissions will also be launched the same day.
The Society of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Delhi and Carmel Convent School have both challenged the new nursery guidelines based on the order of lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung. Apart from disagreeing with the new guidelines, they are also opposing the 20% EWS quota in schools on government land. St Columba’s has already managed to win a stay on that; others seek an extension of it to them also.
Another school association, already denied a stay, may appeal.
But for once, parents “aren’t panicking.” High court’s refusal to impose a stay on the new guidelines has made them more confident. “The parents aren’t worried the process will change
again. What is taking space on the website now are discussions on the 5% reservation for girls and how it’s unfair to boys,” says admissionsnursery’s Sumit Vohra. Also, many schools like GD Goenka (Dwarka), Fr Agnel School, Cambridge Primary School and Mirambika haven’t waited to hear the outcome of the cases and have posted admission information consistent with the new guidelines on their websites.
Even though the guidelines will be debated in court yet again, the government is tightening the grievance re
dress mechanism. The boards with information on education officials and the helpline number – 27352525 – are going up in schools. But one education activist points out that the extra helpline – unless there is clarity of how action will be taken – may just add to confusion.
“The helpline should be linked to existing channels of redressing grievances. The directorate’s website already offers the facility of online registration of complaints and there are also District Admission Monitoring Committees (DAMCs),” he says.
