Govt may fix upper age limit for nursery admissions

NEW DELHI: Delhi Government's department of education is considering a policy decision that'll fix the upper age limit for nursery admission. And because this issue is in court and there are RTE guidelines to factor in, the Directorate of Education will be making its decision "in consultation with" the human resource ministry.

"We have got feedback from parents who had applied last year and they want an upper age limit. Meanwhile, there's been a court case and the court has asked for the government view," says Amit Singla, director, DoE. "We are thinking of putting some cap," he says, "But it's also a technical issue. There's RTE's requirement of admission into age appropriate class. We have to check the RTE. It's not a simple matter and we are in the process of consulting MHRD. After that we'll finalize our reply."

The absence of a government-imposed upper limit on age for nursery admission has led to considerable confusion in the past. An age criterion varies with schools. Parents who failed to admit their children last year are typically worst off. Their kids have joined nursery at the same institutions where they attended play-school and parents are wondering if they should go for nursery or KG this year.

Sanjay Nagpal's is a case in point. Based near Hari Nagar, west Delhi, Nagpal had failed to secure admission for his daughter, now four, in any school last year and she has continued into the nursery class of the same play school she was attending before. "I had gone to a Vikaspuri school. They told me I would have the distance problem and recommended I try in nursery class instead of KG. But they also said they'll give preference to kids who are below four," he says. Chances of getting admission into KG are slimmer too as, by then, most seats are filled.

"There are many confused parents whose kids could not make it into any school last year. This year, they have crossed four years and parents are wondering which class to apply for. Last year, some popular schools gave 10 to 15 points extra for admission into nursery if the child was over four and at the same time, some other equally popular schools in Delhi had decided they won't admit kids over four into nursery but into KG," says Sumit Vohra, founder, admissionsnursery.com.

These guidelines are mandatory as many schools like Shriram, Ahlcon public ,Srijan gave extra 10-15 points to 4 yr+ or older children which left no vacancy for younger kids between 3-4yrs olds.

My son's birth month is in the borderline month, i.e. Feb (2009) which makes him 4.2 yrs for admission this academic session. I'm interested for the nursery admission considering his borderline birth month. Hope upper age limit guidelines gose in favour for children born in the months of Jn/Feb/March.

Priyanka, I think they might keep like central schools which is for 2yrs upper cut off(for class1)Min 5yr-max7 yrs i.e for nursery it might be min 3yrs -5yrs max. on 31mar.

Sakshi Mam you are right

this Upper cutoff age = Minimum cutoff age + 2 years will do some justice to the needful parents.

Yes mam,but DOE should come before 15 dec ,so parents are clear about upper cut off age.

Thanks sakshi, just keeping my fingers crossed
