Yes Somali you are right. If schools wish they can make this system transparent, put everything online, let each applicant know what's happening. Let the draw also be computerized, or be developed in such a manner that it's fool proof and honest and have no manual interference.
But at the end of the day it's business for schools and even if they have 150 seats, they keep on selling forms with prospectus at hefty prices and and make money every year. This is their 'season' (as if it's a Diwali for shop owners). They are least bothered about the harassment parents go through. In fact it's better for them since the more desperate a parent is, more eager they'll be to shell out money for the branded schools.
Absolutely right Roohi....HAppy Diwali to schools...
I agree with Geetali...if they want to implement a system it should be tried out, debated and then put into place...they keep coming out with half baked systems and then decide that they dont work...what has Mr. Lovely been doing throughout the year...in such a hurry and under pressure now, wont he come up with an untested and random proposition... can we please stop playing around ??
very well said henna i agree with u
Other things being equal, the school could go in for a lottery for unfilled seats. The other things being taking into account

1) Neighbourhood
2) Siblings (max upto 2 in a school)
3) Qualification of parents
4) Other criteria including local reservations etc not to exceed 5% of total available seats - in which case there can be a draw of lots here as well
Draw of lots is the best method as everyone regardless of their community, rich vs. poor, educated vs. uneducated people would have equal probability of being selected. Even researchers follow the same method for their research work then why can not the schools.
Dear Parents

I think point system is a best option but the weightage should change. this will have tranparency.

Lottery system is the best way.Every child gets equal opportunity. No parents can have regrets for the school of their choice. This system will also put a mar to the parents who get their ward seat reserved by paying bribes/donation to the school of their choice. But the system is only welcome when it is purely fair.
We should endeavour to put our child through the education system that we believe in strongly....why focus on feeling less guilty...you know you will still do the best for your child.

People who have to pay and get in...will do so in any case. Talking about the point system...pls look at the admission list of Vasant Valley last year....its difficult to believe that the whos who of Delhi had exceptional points...

Instead of focussing so much on admission crieteria, we would be much better off focusing on building infrastructure and schools ....coming out with these random processes is not going to address the basic issue
screening
I thnk its d best n a very fair process in whch child's luck plays a vital role.
In my opinion Education is the right of every child but due to lack of quality government schools we are more dependant on private/public schools. That is the main problem. For the limited private schools this is an opportunity for business. The selection for admission should be based on priority. 1st it should be the distance parameters, then siblings, then area of residence i.e. whether the child is residing in a locality where quality schools are few. The selection of child based on qualification and financial background of the parents is discrimination because every parents wants their children to attain quality education which they lacked. The minimum age for admission to nursery should be 4 years because 3 years is a very tender age for a child to got to school that too in place like Delhi where the shool starts so early in the morning.
