nd-a-half, putting parents in a tough spot. Schools which admit children who are three years of age on March 31, 2016, include Amity International in Sector 43 and GD Goenka Public School in Sector 48, among others. Neha Verma, admission coordinator at GD Goenka, said, "We've kept three years as the criterion as it is the norm followed in all Delhi schools." Schools which have three years and six months as their age cutoff, include The Shri Ram School, The Heritage School, Shikshanter, Sun City World School, Lotus Valley International School, DAV Public School, Salwan Public School and Delhi Public School in Sector 45. "We want slightly more mature children in class, which is why we have kept three-and-a-half years as the age criteria," said Anita Malhotra, principal of Lotus Valley International School. Arti Chopra, the principal of Amity International School, said, "There is no uniform rule, so schools in Gurgaon can decide their age criterion independently. There should be no confusion among parents, though, as this is clearly mentioned in admission forms." The disparity in age criterion, though, has left parents confused. Vijay Aggarwal, a resident of South City-II who is seeking admission for his son born on November 15, 2012, said, "My son will be three years and four months on March 31 next year. I can apply to some schools, but most good ones will disqualify him as he would be younger by 45 days as per their criterion. I can't afford to waste a year to apply for one of these schools." Sumit Vohra, who runs a website on nursery admissions in NCR, said, "Many parents cannot get their kids admitted to the desired school due to the age criteria. If they wait for the next year, their child is not eligible in schools such as Amity, which have four years as the upper cut-off age for nursery admissions. More than 1,500 schools in Delhi follow an uniform criteria of three years. Why can't the 100-150-odd schools in Gurgaon do the same?"

September.
Gurgaon-based Vijaylakshmi has been calling schools everyday. "I've also been coaching my son," she says. She is interested in having her son admitted into one of three schools and is referring to admissionsnursery.com - started by another beleaguered parent - for help.
She is interested in DPS Sushant Lok, which had sold forms at an admissions fair but isn't anymore. "They say they'll start selling after August 21." Parents who collected DPS Sushant Lok forms were told that appointment details for their round of interactions will be intimated in the first week of September. Registration is open at other schools, too, including Lotus Valley International School (Gurgaon), Shiv Nadar Schools (Gurgaon, Noida) and GD Goenka Public School (Indirapuram).
Ardee School started selling forms on August 16 and the last date for submission is September 15. "DPS Vasundhara opened last week and admissions there will remain open for another two weeks. We are not covered by the Directorate of Education guidelines. We're lucky that way," says Rita Kapur, executive director, DPS Ghaziabad Society.
Another Gurgaon parents have already managed to get her son placed in Ryan International. "I bought the form at the fair and they gave me a date and time for the interaction there itself. My child got selected," she says sounding relieved.
Most of Sarbani Ojha's "target schools" - Scottish High School, Heritage and Sun City School - will open only next week. "I also want Shri Ram School but for that I'll have to wait till January. I feel uneasy about waiting," she says.
"In Delhi, the bigger, better established schools will wait till the guidelines from the Directorate of Education are declared. Most open after November," says Sumit Vohra who has started AdmissionsNursery.com.

igh of relief with the High Court having fixed the minimum age (between 3-4 years) for admission to Nursery, parents in NCR are confused with no similar regulation in their states. While some schools in Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurgaon are allowing kids between 3-4 years, others are seeking kids between 3.5-4.5 years, while the rest are asking for kids between 3.6-4.6 years of age. So kids eligible for some schools become ineligible for others. Cases in point in Noida are DPS and Somerville which have fixed the age criteria at 3 years 6 months, while APJ and Amity schools in the same city have set it at 3 years. In Gurgaon, DPS Sector 45, Sun City and Scottish High are allowing kids at minimum 3.5 years while Heritage, Ardee, Ridge Valley and Lotus Valley have kept it flexible.Sumit Vohra of admissionsnursery.com, a website helping parents getting their wards admitted in nursery, says, “In Delhi, the DoE has fixed the age criteria. So everyone knows that their kids have to be between 3 to 4 years to get into nursery. However, in the absence of any set guidelines in NCR, schools are setting their own age eligibilities leading to unnecessary confusion. It is especially a problem for first-time parents as they are not familiar with the admission process.”“Most schools are asking for minimum 3.5 and 3.6 years so that the students they get, are mature enough, don’t suffer from anxiety and are more disciplined; but many new schools located in far flung areas are accepting kids at 3 years also to be able to fill up their seats. A reputed educational trust has set different age criteria at its branches in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon and Expressway which is wrong.”Nupur Khandelwal, a parent and resident of Indirapuram in Ghaziabad, says, “I wanted to get my son admitted in St. Thomas school which is closest to my house; but they were asking for students of 3.5 years and my son was falling short by a few days. So we opted for DPS which is further and costlier.”Preeti Dhaliwal, another such parent and resident of Sushant Lok says, “I wanted my daughter admitted in DPS last year, but she was falling short by a month. Ultimately, I had to keep her in playschool for an extra year, something I didn’t want to do at all, and looking forward to getting her admitted in DPS now. I hope there are no hassles now.”…
N: The nursery admissions kicked off barely a week ago in Gurgaon, but parents seeking admissions for their little ones have little to choose from. The reason some schools are close on the heels of shutting the admissions window, while others haven't even started the process. Experts say this is because of the absence of a uniform academic calendar here, like in Delhi.
"I had applied for a prominent school near Sector 56. It started offering admissions on August 1 and my child was shortlisted. But it wants the fee to be paid before August 8 when Blue Bells Public School will start the admissions. There are schools that will start the admission process later such as Heritage Public School and Scottish High International," said Vijay Singh (name changed), a parent. Another parent, on the condition of anonymity, said, "My child has secured admission in DPS Sushant Lok and we have been given only two days to deposit the fee that is in the range of Rs 60,000. But then, I won't be able to apply for my child in Lotus Valley International and DPS Sector 45." The problem is quite prevalent and even the schools admit it, but they blame it on the parents' fickle-mindedness.
DPS Sushant Lok's principal Ruchi Seth said, "The parents should come to us with a lot of preparation. They normally do their recce before they fill up the form and when their children are shortlisted, they should not refrain from depositing the fee. Moreover, we give each parent three days' time to think and take a decision."
Another school head, Rupa Chakraborty of Sun City World School, said, "Parents should do their thorough research before applying anywhere. And when the opportunity arises, why should they wait for any other school then?"
Anjali Nagpal, principal of Blue Bells Public School, said, "Though we have not started the admissions, we will give parents three days' time to deposit the fee. And we are flexible about extending the date by a few more days if the parents are not sure about it."
However, experts say the authorities should fix the timelines for all schools to follow just as it is done in Delhi to avoid the recurrence of this problem. "Unless we have uniform admission calendar like in Delhi, this problem cannot be resolved and the directorate of education should look into it," said Sumit Vohra, founder of www.admissionsnursery.com, a virtual platform for parents seeking admission for their children in NCR.
Sun City World School's Rupa also agreed. "If the authorities fix a date for opening the admissions, the problem will be sorted. The schools might be given a liberty to close them as they feel like."
When contacted, a senior official in the district administration told TOI, "The rules are made at the directorate level and are applicable statewide. But the problem is very city-specific and so far, no concrete solution has been proposed by the government. We can't frame a policy at Gurgaon level."
District elementary education officer, Prem Lata, couldn't be contacted.

sery admissions in the NCR cities of Noida, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad has parents worried. Unlike the capital, which has a set of guidelines for all schools to follow, the Uttar Pradesh and Haryana state education boards have no such policy for admissions in private schools. Most schools in the NCR have written tests for parents and interviews with three-year-olds as their admission criteria. These schools have long questionnaires attached to application forms for parents, asking them unwarranted questions like qualifications of their in-laws, grandparents, whether or not they are teetotallers, among others. Besides, the toddlers are to identify shapes and colours in order to get through the interview to nursery grade.
Neeraj Thapliyal, who has applied to five schools in Noida and Ghaziabad for his kid's admission said, "At one of the schools there are two rounds for being eligible for admission. The first round has a form with 40 objective type questions. The questions range from assessing our parenting skills to the educational and professional qualifications of our in-laws and grandparents.
If on the basis of our answers the form gets selected then we are called for round two, which is an interview with the parents and the child. It is a total bizarre system of selection. Nursery admissions have become tougher than cracking an IIT entrance test."
Another parent based in Gurgaon said, "Since I am a single parent, there was a separate set of questions for this category asking my monthly remuneration, if I am a teetotaller or how I will understand the child's psychology etc. This should not be the admission criteria, as not every parent will be able to answer them, which doesn't mean that their kid does not deserve to study in a good school."
While, the directorate of education (DOE) in Delhi sets a common date for all schools to start the admissions at the same time, schools in the NCR decide the dates on their own.
While some schools including Amity International, Ghaziabad, has wrapped up its online applications, Lotus Valley International School — Noida and Gurgaon branches, and Sun City, Gurgaon, Scottish High, Gurgaon, have just begun its sale of applications. Other private schools are likely to begin admissions in mid-September.
"The UP and Haryana governments must issue a set of guidelines in order to prevent schools from adopting such policies as interviewing children or making parents answer uncomfortable questions. There are a number of issues related to nursery admissions in the NCR of which hundreds of parents complain on the forum. Since admission process here is not uniform it goes on from July to December. Hence, parents are left in a dilemma whether they should block a seat or not as these schools have no unform fee refund policy ," said Sumit Vohra, founder of admissionsnursery.com, a forum to guide parents in nursery admissions.
