schools of the city.
Long queues were witnessed at many schools in the city as parents wanted to get the forms on the very first day of the admisssion season this year to avoid further rush.
The selling of forms in many schools began at around 8:30 in the morning and continued till late afternoon.
"There has been a huge rush for admission forms since morning," said Jyoti Bose, Principal of Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan.
"More than 800 forms have been sold today, and we expect similar trend in the days to come too," she told PTI.
Ashok Pandey, Principal of Ahlcon International School, Mayur Vihar, that has made the selling and submission of admission forms online witnessed more than 450 registrations today.
"There have been over 450 registrations, 300 in general category and over 150 in EWS category today," Ashok Pandey, principal of the school, said.
"If the same trend continues, we except no less than 3000 applications this season," he said.
An official at Laxman Public School, Hauz Khas, said more than 500 forms have been sold on the first day.
As per the guidelines issued by the Directorate of Education of Delhi, the forms will be made available from January 2 to January 16.
However, many schools will stop the sale even earlier which may cause difficulty to many parents.
At St Francis School, a reputed school at Janak Puri, application forms will be available till January 6 and submissions will begin from January 7 to continue till January 12.
There are many such schools which have tweaked their admission schedule for unspecified reasons.
"This is not only a violation of DoE guidelines, it may cause great difficulties for parents of that region," says Sumit Vohra, founder of parents' forum admissionsnursery.com.
Agreeing with Vohra, Pandey of Ahlcon International school said, "I am unable to understand what benefit a school can get by violating the norms.
"As per DoE guidelines, the entire process of admission will have to be completed by March 31.
The schools will have to publish the first list of selected candidates by February 1 and second list by February 28.
There are about 4,500 schools in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), of which over 2,000 are unaided private schools which have been the first preference of parents.…

A few schools in the city are admitting four-year-olds in pre-school classes for academic session 2011-12.Ahlcon Public School in Mayur Vihar (East Delhi) and two branches of The Heritage School in Vasant Kunj (South Delhi) and Rohini in (Northwest Delhi) are admitting children in the age group of three to five years in their pre-school classes. I think four is an ideal age to be in school. The maturity level of a four-year-old is also more than a three-year-old. Also, the Right to Education (RTE) Act says a six-year-old should be ideally be admitted in Class I. That is why we are giving more weightage to four plus children in our school. The hearing in the case is scheduled for January 11.Sumit Vohra, founder of www.admissionsnursery.com, said, “This (admitting older children) will disturb the applecart. Supreme Court seeking a stay on nursery admissions guidelines issued by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.
However, nursery admissions began on Tuesday as per the notification of Directorate of Education, even as some parents said they have been caught unawares.
“ We have filed a petition today ( Tuesday) in the Supreme Court, and tomorrow our lawyer will mention the case in the court, seeking an urgent hearing,” said S. K. Bhattacharya, Chairman, Action Committee of Unaided Recognised Private Schools.
Bhattacharya added that the case is expected to come for hearing on Friday.
The December 18 guidelines issued by LG Jung had made some sweeping changes to the previous guidelines that were operational for the last seven years. The new guidelines have increased weightage to ‘ neighbourhood’ criterion and have scrapped the 20 per cent ‘ management quota.’ Meanwhile, confusion prevailed among parents and schools on the first day of nursery admissions, as many among them were unaware that admissions process has begun on Tuesday.
“ I was expecting some relief will be given to parents by the HC. I was expecting admissions will start in few days and I have not even collected all the documents.
It is only now that I came to school to take the form,” said Rohit Chabra, who reached Salwan Public School in Rajinder Nagar around 3pm.
While few parents said they were having difficulty in filling the online admissions forms, some school authorities said they were ready to help. “ We have started our admission process from today as we have to follow the rules.
There was a lot of confusion as the notification from Directorate of Education came late and we had to do a lot of preparations. Any parent who finds it difficult to fill the online forms can come to school for assistance,” said Rekha Krishnan, principal, Vasant Valley School.
Despite cold weather and rain, parents queued up to collect forms, even though some of them knew that their wards do not fulfil the ‘ neighbourhood’ criterion of Jung’s guidelines. “ I have no option but to try my luck. There are no good schools near my residence.
So, I am trying at all the schools even if they are beyond 8 kilometres. The schools are also helpless as they have no authority to consider my case,” said Shalini who lives in Chattarpur.
At many schools, parents had to return empty handed as forms were not being given over the counter and were only available online. Schools that are also selling forms over the counter include DAV Public School; Saint Giri; Glory Public School; Tagore International, East of Kailash; Ryan International, Vasant Kunj; Ahlcon Public School and ASN School in Mayur Vihar.
The last date for submission of applications to schools is February 5.
Admissions will close on March 31, according to a Directorate of Education notification. The date for the first list of selected candidates is February 28.

dly interaction between students and teachers, I think study is just a mat- ter of play.
J A I D E E P S I N G H , student Studies are not a burden for us at schools in the area. The various activities in school take the stress away.
D E S N A S R I M A N I , student The Commonwealth Games may have given east Delhi a fillip (and some headaches) in terms of roads, housing and other infrastructure, but the area's schools didn't need any such reason to upgrade their own facilities to keep pace with the demands of today's students and parents.
The parameter-wise results of the Hindustan Times C fore Top School survey highlight the various strengths of the schools here. DAV, Sreshtha Vihar has topped in the `sports' category, while Somerville School, Vasundhara Enclave has the highest `value for money' score.
One of east Delhi's most well known schools, Ahlcon International, Mayur Vihar, has been ahead of the curve in many respects. Though the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) of the CBSE came into effect this year, the school has always placed emphasis on a balanced, overall development for its students, and not just high marks. “Art, music, dance-all are compulsory till class 8,“ said Ashok Pandey, Principal.
Many schools here believe in application-based education -allowing students to innovate and invent. “Other schools are engaged in one or the other activity but Ahlcon stresses everything equally,“ said Charu Sood, a class 10 student. Ahlcon International topped the survey in the `innovative teaching', `extra-curricular activities' and `competence of teachers' parameters, among others. TECHNOLOGY AND TRAINING The school also maps each student's progress electronically. “From grades, to which books they are checking out from the librarywe use it all to take decisions about the child. Data reduces subjectivity to almost nil in student evaluation,“ added Pandey.
Equality of opportunity is something many schools here stress, particularly since parents want their children to participate and excel in various activities -be it dramatics or sports. Favouritism, being a 'teacher's pet', are trends on the decline.
Schools are also trying to provide good exposure to students. Exchange programs with schools in Germany are a matter of pride for Salwan Public School(SPS), Mayur Vihar, PhaseIII, among others. “It is important to get a global perspective, which is why tie-ups with foreign schools are important,“ said Desna Srimani, a student at the school. Salwan topped the `individual attention to students' and `infrastructure and facilities' parameters.
Teachers at SPS have attended workshops at various IITs, IIMs and even Harvard University in the United States. The mantra here is to provide excellent training to its teachers, which benefits students in turn.
Which is probably why students such as Mayuri V Raman of SPS said, “I can't live without my school.“ METHODOLOGY The survey was conducted in three phases. In phase-1, schools were invited to provide information on academic and non-academic facilities, performance of students and profile of teachers. Then research agency C fore shortlisted schools for the second round, in which a perceptual survey was carried out with a sample of 3,000 parents and teachers across the city's six zones. They were asked to assess schools they were aware of on a scale of 10 against 14 parameters. Results of the perceptual survey were combined with objective data from the first round to rank schools. In phase-3, C fore researchers visited the schools to conduct an audit and finalise rankings.
Perceptual data scores were extrapolated for schools that did not participate. DISCLAIMER: The survey data is a copyright of HT Media Limited. Any use of this survey data would lead to infringement of the copyright and may result in legal action against the Infringer.
*These schools did not participate in the survey. Their scores are based on the perceptual survey conducted among parents and teachers as mentioned in the methodology.
Nursery fee figures, provided to HT by the schools, are approximate. They include annual fee and development charges (transport fee is variable). For the total fee amount, please contact the schools. TOMORROW To find out which West Delhi schools come out on top in various categories, look out for the Top School survey in tomorrow's HT THEY TOO MAKE THE GRADE...
